Guess you Northerners would know and have recommendations. ;D
I ride down to 30F or so. I want gloves that run off their own internal batteries and just charge overnight like a cell phone. No wires to the bike type clutter. I only need 3-4 hours battery time.
Winter in Melbourne sucks as much as our Summer are Fall are sensational. While not as cold as a true Northern winter we have a damp cold here rather than a dry crisp cold (according to an American bloke I know who lives near me).
Thanks.
I think you'll need at least one extra set of batteries to run gloves at 'high' for 3-4 hours. Even at 'high' these batteries don't exactly burn your hands... Given the choice between 7.5 and 9 volts - get 9.
My bike battery connected heated glove liners are great, but the harness/controller are too much of a hassle for daily use.
I think I'll go to heated grips some time in the future.
These under a set of winter moto gloves might* be a better idea:

Might because I have no idea how well they work, but it seems to me you will still have winter gloves with a liner when the battery dies.
Ive got Five HG-1 Heated gloves and am pretty happy with them. I'm a few k's north of you (Newcastle, NSW), so it probably doesn't get quite so cold. I doubt mine have ever gone more than an hour on at one time, my commute is 15 minutes. I just suffer on the trip they run flat and then charge them that day. You might get a few hours at low or medium heat, but for me that seems to be warm enough.

Interesting thing about that: My wife & I did an Iron-Butt Saddle-Sore (1000 mile ride in 24 hours) ride in the fall of '14. She had heated grips and I had heated gloves. You think that'd be a wash, right? Like, no difference, right?
There WAS difference: Her hands ached toward the end of it b/c she had to grip the heated grips harder to get heat out of them and they didn't add heat to the backs of her hands, where I was just fine even if I pulled my hand(s) off the grips.
Just wanted to add that tidbit.
I agree, the harness to power those things just sucks!
