If you're on a boat, in water, and you throw your suitcase overboard into the water, does the water level increase?
How big is the suitcase?
Does the suitcase float or sink?
If it floats what is the distance between the keel and waterline?
Does any water leak into the suitcase?
Get to work on the fairing stiffeners ;)
Yes.
I need to know at what speed and in which direction the boat sails.
Water level in which reference frame?
And like Howie said, does the suitcase float or sink?
No...
but the boat might now be able to take off due to reduced weight.
As long as the suitcase fits inside the boat, the water level should go down relative to a fixed frame of reference. Why are you throwing a suitcase out of your boat? Are you trying to dispose of a body or mutilated parts of a body? Are G-men closing in on your discreet import business? Hiding porn?

There's no way to work it out.
We better buy a boat.

We better burn a boat.
If the rocket scientist has given up on solving this, there is no hope.
[laugh]
This thread... exactly as I predicted.

If the boat is on fire, that changes everything.
Especially if it catches the treadmill on fire.
That reminds me, why do people get so concerned about fire on their boat?
They're surrounded by water, what's the big deal?
Not only do the sea levels rise, polar bears die, penguins become the new genetic masters of the universe, and Duane Johnson wins an Oscar.

How many suitcases would we have to toss to get rid of Florida?
It'll rise more when you jump in to get your suitcase back.
When does the conveyor belt come into play?
I lasted to 52 seconds watching that vid.... that means I win the boat, right?
Conveyor belt?
I thought it was a treadmill?
Wait, this is getting really complicated.

And the taxes, mooring fees, operating and maintenance costs that go with it. [evil]

That is true...
while they remain obscenely expensive. [thumbsup]
That said...motos and boats are better deals than snowmobiles. ;)

Your avatar is rising enough.
Water level falls briefly, both relative to the boat and relative to a fixed point, while the suitcase is in the air.
When the suitcase hits the water, the water level returns to the previous level relative to the fixed point, yet stays at the lowered level relative to the boat.
