Mr. Hockey. They pretty much broke the mold after him, an amazing player.

RIP.

Great man.   I vaguely remember someone calling him "the John Wayne of Hockey"... pretty apt.

Hey GH...  Tell my Pops 'hi' from me, K?  He'll be the guy in your jersey waiting up front to meet you again...   :'(

Mr. Hockey's last NHL goal - at age 52.  With the assist going to his son. [bow_down]

After he retired in 71 (?) He was put in the Hall of Fame the next year. Then he returned to the game for a short time and had 100 points. The 'Gordie Howe hat trick' is still coveted these days. (Goal-Assist-Fight)  [bow_down]

#9RIP

The greatest Gordie Howe story was told to me by a Master Technician I worked with at a Nissan dealership back in Michigan.  Terry was from Detroit and grew up watching the Wings, including Gordie, play at The Old Barn (The Olympia).

I found a part of the story online:

"For the 1973-74 season, Howe came out of retirement to sign a four-year contract with the Houston Aeros of the fledgling WHA so he could play with his sons Mark and Marty. He’d retired from Detroit two seasons earlier.

During that first season, one opponent made the foolish decision to hold 18-year-old Mark down on the ice after a skirmish. The unfortunate soul then compounded his mistake by cursing the old man when Gordie told him to let the boy go. The miscreant then took his life in his own hands suggesting that dad let his son fight his own battles.

Gordie had heard enough.

Gordie reached over, put two fingers up the guy’s nose and lifted him off Mark,”

The story seemed hard to believe.  But then I saw Wayne Gretzky on Letterman (I believe) one night and he told the exact same story.   [bow_down] [bow_down] [bow_down]

He was a great ambassador for the sport of hockey.  Detroit and the Red Wings were fortunate to have him.

Ironically, he only ever had two of those in his career.

Legends live large.
