Anyone have first-hand experience with ceramic coated exhaust pipes? Does the coating make a real noticeable difference or is it just wishful thinking?
You'd have to dyno the bike with the intent of remapping the ECU to take advantage of the "exhaust port scouring" property that ceramic coating provides, otherwise you'll just get more lean popping on deceleration. You might also notice less radiant heat from the header in heavy traffic, but without remapping, that's about it.
My intent with ceramic coating would be to reduce the radiant heat from the exhaust system… especially the rear cylinder that has the header right under the seat. I'm not concerned about potential performance gains, although, MORE POWER is always better [evil]
I'm beginning to realize the R-spec 999 must have a useable riding "season" of about four days in mid-February when it's about 28 degrees or so. Oh well. I like February…
How about wrapping the exhaust?
Swanny
I'm told it helps and I also don't think you need more power. [evil]

Does that help reduce the heat on the rider? Silly question I know but having read just enough technical stuff to be dangerous, as I understand it, engines perform better *to a point* if they retain some heat in the exhaust system. Turbochargers get heat blankets, etc. Unclear if it reduces the ambient heat in the engine compartment/inside bike fairings.
Thanks for the replies.

I would think so since the heat is coming from the inside of the pipes...but I am no expert!

Going with the heat wrap of the rear cylinder header and S-pipe for now.
Took the bike out this morning at 8 am when it was about 78 degrees. No worries. Headed home when it hit 85 at 10:00. Just starting to get too hot to ride… Come on February [bang] [bang]
I rode my 796 a little in the last 2 weeks (95-100F) and setting at lights was hell (almost quite literally, given the heat.) I've considered ceramic coating as well, but also wondered about how effective thermal wrap would be...
Anyone know someone in the DFW area that does ceramic? I'd like to at least get an idea of what it costs...
I have used Quality Powder Coating on Forms Dr. In Carrollton, but any powder coating place should do ceramic coating. Cost was $250 with a week turnaround time, but it's been a minute since that job was done.
BTW, I got aluminized silver for looks, but flat black is supposed to have better heat-holding properties.
OK, so never mind on the heat wrap. My garage is 110 degrees… Can't "work" in that!
Having the pipes ceramic coated [thumbsup]
I've done a couple sets of customer's pipes in the satin black.
Looks good, and the vendor said it's real-world friendly, as opposed to the flat or gloss.

Thanks. I originally thought silver would work OK, but I'll go with Satin Black then.
Where are you having it done? This is something I have always been curious about but never seriously enough to look into it.
Mark
Didn't happen without pictures!!! [thumbsup]

AMS is farming it out so I don't know who is actually doing the coating. I'll know when I pick the bike up.

How much are they charging?

Haven't seen the bill yet. Probably another week or so before everything gets reassembled and ready for pick-up.
So what was the final bill? How did they turn out?

No. But my other bike is working very well.

Yes I can, thanks for asking ;D [popcorn]
SO! I got the SBK yesterday with brushed aluminum colored ceramic coating on the exhaust system - inside and out. And let me just say this; the exhaust pipes were cool to the touch by the time I had parked in the garage, gone inside and changed out of my riding gear. And this was at 5:45 pm, ambient temps in the mid 90's.
If anyone is on the fence about ceramic coating, I whole heartedly recommend it.
Do it… [Dolph]
P.S. Yea, yea… Pictures or it didn't happen.
Patience, people. It was raining today.
[popcorn]
you have a garage......... [thumbsdown]

Yes!
Unhappy my pipes are coated... yet. What was the cost of just the coating... assuming they itemized?

I think it was right around 300 bucks (I picked up the bike Thursday afternoon about 5 minutes after AMS closed) so I did not get my copy of the itemized bill because it was so late in the day. When I do, I will post.
Now about those group rides everyone keeps talking about ;D

Let's put it this way; I've ridden it just one time
without earplugs [evil] Never got above 70 mph. Ouch!
well then I'll whip her into shape. Jason pushed me regularly past 100 today....degrees that is. :-X
Well… I'm in northern California. On the beach. It's sixty-five. Degrees that is [cheeky]
And just so we're clear on my bike - it has been known to go above 70 mph on one or two occasions. Not while I'm riding it of course. Alan is the one…
Hello All.
Been awhile, but wanted to drop in and say hello.
Cher, what model are you riding these days?

Oh lord. I had no idea. Glad you're still with us Cher.
I had a matte red ceramic coating on the Termi headers of my S4Rs. I was only going for the appearance, and I liked it, but the coating did start to flake off right at the exhaust ports.
I sure miss Texas and all the nice Ducati folks in the DFW area.
Thanks. I'm hanging up the helmet. I had lots of fun riding and I will miss The Group but it is time for me to find another hobby that does not threaten life and limb ;D
I love photography.

Do you currently have a camera? Are you shooting pix? Would love to see some of your photos.
I had my first gallery exhibition in LA last October.
Here are some of the images shown...
