Title: Time for a new battery. Recommendations, please?
Post by: faolan01 on August 14, 2016, 03:28:15 PM
Well the battery in my 2006 S2R800 seems to be pretty much toast. I've had to pull it and put it on the tender a couple times this year (can't find the leave on cable. Seriously, how did I loose that?) so it's time for a replacement. It's the original battery from when I bought the bike in 2007, so I've gotten plenty of years out of it at this point. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement? I did a search of the forum and scanned through a bunch of the threads that came up, but they all seemed to be several years old and I know new things have hit the market since then.

A high quality AGM battery like a Yuasa or a high quality Lithium battery like a Shorai. The onus is on quality. Don't be tempted by very cheap Lithium batteries due to safety reasons.
What battery was in your bike, an AGM Yuasa?

I upgraded to a Battery Tender Lithium battery. Extremely reliable. I live in Arizona, with temperatures getting up to 120 degrees, fires up no problem. Even in the winter when temps got down to 50, still starts no problem. Had the battery for a year now and it was not too expensive!!! I got it on amazon for less than OEM!!!. These batteries have a two year warranty. Highly recommend.

Loved my Shorai on my S2R1000. Went with the bike when I sold it...

Try putting "Lithium Batteries" into the search function.

He asked for recommendations on batteries, not "Lithium batteries", lol.

And I, like everyone else, seem to be recommending Lithium!

I also recommended an AGM battery.
My recommendation was for quality.
The search function suggestion was to explore Li battery issues as they are a different animal from AGM batteries.

If you want a lead acid battery just get the Yuasa YT12B-BS your bike came with.  I've had one for 7 years and it was still starting the bike when I replaced it.

[thumbsup]

Just needs a monthly top-up on a Battery Tender when not in use. Average life in Triumphs is also 6 - 9 years if kept charged. The stock rectifier/regulator on Bonnevilles is marginal too.  8)

I'm a lead acid battery fan also. They're inexpensive, durable, and long lasting with minimal maintenance. Just make sure the plates never see air and it will last a long time. The only down side to them is they'll leak if the bike ends up on its' side.

My oem Yuasa in my Hyper is very reliable and very strong. [thumbsup]. I would buy another.

Thanks for the input! I'm leaning towards sticking with the Yuasa YT12B-BS for cost reasons, but I had been toying with the idea of going with Lithium.

heaven forbid you drop you bike, but add in the cost of painting parts when acid spills over it! mine leaked, acid ate the plastic battery box, then spilt onto the head/engine, and frame  :'(

new paintjob looks mint! but my lithium battery was cheaper  ;) you will shit yourself when you see how small and light they are too!

may you have a long lasting, fully charged battery for years to come, whatever your choice!

The stock Yuasa is an AGM, and AGM batteries do not leak except in very rare circumstances.

No FHE, but EarthX has always looked interesting:

Not to threadjack, but this is sort of relevant...

Are Battery Tenders the correct charger for the AGM batteries?  Years ago I used an old 'trickle' charger on my 650's AGM battery(s)... it was killing them in about a year!  Guy down at the auto parts store explained the difference to me in battery construction and charging needs.

My 796 came with a remote pigtail in place, and what I am assuming is the stock battery (I haven't looked at it, yet.)  I need to get a new maintenance charger but don't want to get the wrong one and/or destroy my battery.

Battery Tender Jr. is fine. Normally though, I top up the charge every couple of weeks rather than leave it on as some do. My T-100 uses the same Yuasa AGM as our 796. Touch wood, still OK after 7 years!

Many of us tend to call trickle chargers Battery Tenders, think Kleenex or Fridge.  Many trickle chargers today are compatible with AGM or gel batteries.  Your batteries probably were not killed by the Tender unless either there was either something wrong with the charger (they can fail and overcharge)  or the bike was used infrequently.  The difference between a regular tender and one for AGM is float voltage. AGM requires a higher rate to fully charge the battery.  Not a big deal.

Yep.
