Hello. Diamond DeVille here. New to the forum, and only a few years into riding. My Monster M900 is my first bike, and was purchased as a rebuild bike.
When I first had him, I had some simple repairs to do to get him back up and running, also knowing that I would have to replace a bunch of stuff within a few years.
A year and a half ago, my Igor was involved in a hit-and-run accident (I was not on him, it happened when I was at work, someone hit him while he was parked, backed into and ran over, and left without a note). Since then I've had him back on the road, but with plenty of 'band aids' to keep him together.
This winter I took advantage of taking him apart to replace the exhaust system to go ahead and really strip him down to nothing, get the frame painted and double check everything to make sure he's safe.
I'll be posting updates and photos here as I go.
I know plenty of people have shared their updates and their rebuild projects. But I am proud of myself for doing all of this myself.
Thank you for reading along.
Enjoy.
Diamond
Winter is over in about 8 days...where's the pictures??? :)
Will be watching. Cheers.

Now for some of the upgrades:
Starting with the gas tank.
Old Tank (Dented when I bought him. Two owners ago when too fast around a corner and wiped out. My friend bought him as a project "I'm going through a divorce and need a project bike. When he abandoned the project, he sold Igor to me to finish up)

Thank you. He was actually rebuilding one of his Rokons while I was working on my Monster. We've got 4 of them. If you look at the photo of me holding the handlebars up with all the wires, that's actually a Rokon tire in the background not my monsters lol. So much fun
What mods are planned?
Nice w a carbie project, maybe I can contribute something, been awhile...
I used to work for/with a guy that did a bunch of R&D for the original Rokon bikes back in the 70's.
Time flies.
My dad's Rokon (he also has an all original one too, both 1967ish era)
He did this one up for his benefit rides :)

Complete overhaul. Frame touched up/reinforced and painted. Check all connections and seals when putting everything back on. Clean up wires, new led lights. Full cleaning. Carb cleaning. New exhaust system. Seat recovered. Plus all routine maintenance, oil change, spark plugs, valve check and timing belt (to be done by my mechanic, I don't know enough yet to do that myself).

That's awesome. Do you remember his name? My dad probably knows him. My dad is Kevin Stone out of Sanford. Does a lot of benefit rides with Chip Austin.
Frank Camillieri...he was the service manager at Boston Cycles, as well as a respected tool and die maker. He also made the very first die for the Head aluminum tennis racket extrusions. They were duplicated by Elox EDM machines. He's still involved in bikes, and racing. I saw him last year at a USCRA vintage race.
The Rokons he was involved with were more conventional looking.

Can't wait to see how it comes out.
My Birthday was on the 25th. My dad surprised me and got my frame done sooner than I thought. Happy Birthday to me!!

Thank you guys ;D
I'll be back at my parents on Sunday. That's when I get to start the long project of putting it all back together
10 hours of work, and it's starting to look like a bike again. Still a long ways to go, and the wiring harness placement is screwing with me. But I'm happy with where I left it...

Nice and for some reason I thought the frame was red, not pink.
The frame looks super nice [thumbsup]
Black or white whell?
Thanks guys!
I love the pink. Will match the Ducati logo on my flat black tank.
I think maybe next winter I'll do the wheels black.
[thumbsup]
Great you're doing it your way. :)
Got some more done yesterday.
Got the rest of the wiring harness in. Connected everything, plugged in battery and all lights came on without the key. Oops. Time to find the ground.
I still have the exhaust to finish and weld up. Tighten up my suspension. Then send it to my mechanic (Gerry at Moto Milano in Windham ME) where he will do the valves and timing. Then I'll be all done!!
It was the first beautiful day, so I had to pull him outside to work on.

Fingers crossed I can get the rest of the exhaust done this weekend, then I'll get to send it off to Gerry and hopefully have it back by next month :)
A labour of love well worth the time, money and effort. ðŸ'ðŸ»ðŸ'ðŸ»
Alright. Now I'm stuck.
I've plugged everything in. I've double checked all wires. Checked the grounds. Checked the fuses.
Every time I connect the battery, my dash lights up, without the key in it. Any ideas what could be causing it? I'm stumped.
(Wiring/electrical was always my weakness)...
Does the headlight come on? Directionals work? Motor crank?

No, but the dash board lights up. If I put the key in, it makes no difference.
Are you saying when you put the key in and turn it on the motor won't crank, the h/l doesn't come on...etc, but the dash stays lit?
Battery -negative to engine connected?
And battery is fresh?
Nothing happens when I put the key in. Stays lit up but nothing else happens.
I have everything connected. I'm wondering if the ground isn't connected correctly because of the new paint and I didn't grind off enough contact.

Good possibility. There is a ground under the battery box, some bikes have a ground at the R/R, and there is also a short ground strap from the engine cases to the frame behind the r/h rearset. Get some appropriately sized toothed washers. They'll help.
The motor mounts on the frame have to be bear metal in order to provide good ground to the motor. All the electronics hare grounded to the frame/motor. Improper ground to the motor will lead to electrical issues...
I'ts common to see people paint their frame but not clean up the paint off the motor monts... hope it helps [thumbsup]

Ooohhh I didn't even think of the motor mounts, just the spots where the grounds are...
Thank you. I'll check that next weekend.
Now here's the question, is there a way that I can grind the paint off of the motor mounts without having to take the bike pletely apart? Or can I take those bolts out and just drop the engine very slightly to squeeze in there and get it. I would have to hate to backtrack A month's worth of work because of my stupidity
There's more than one way to achieve a good ground for the motor. The factory doesn't grind the frame before installing the motor.
Do you have the ground strap from the back of the motor to the frame behind the r/h rearset installed? Is that point free of paint? Is the area where the ground cable attaches free of paint?

I do. And I thought I had grounded it down clear enough. It's hard to check now with the engine attached but ill check it out again.
I'm stumped. This is why I hate electrical work lol

You might try those toothed washers I mentioned.
A jumper from the engine to battery ground will verify if that's the problem before you chase your tail.
Conclusion: I couldn't figure it out, and I didn't want to start messing with electrical stuff.
Bike is loaded in the back of my dad's truck. Will be dropped off to the mechanic tomorrow afternoon, and I'll have him do the rest of the stuff that I can't do.
A little saddened that I couldn't do 100% of the work myself. But for my first time ever doing anything like this, I think my 75% was enough to be proud of.
Thank you guys for your input. I'll be sure to post the final photos when I get him back (in a month or so I'm guessing).
Be proud. You are still in charge of rehabilitating Igor project. Not many shops do everything.
Thats right. Good work [thumbsup]
I have a really nice set of Dukabike rearsets that would look great on that!

Sharp looking bike right there!
Still a bunch of ups and downs with the bike. I've gotten a couple thousand miles in for only a couple months of riding. Snapped the throttle cable this morning, so no riding for a while until I can get a new one (no one has one in stock in all of New England).
But, here's a bunch of photos my friend took of me replacing the Sprocket and Chain (and yes, I had to dress up for the photos).
