I’ve got an internet connectivity issue on my home PC that I can’t figure out…

I use Verizon 4G LTE for my ISP, and use Google Chrome for my browser. A few months ago my ancient wireless router shit the bed, so I got a new one (Belkin N600). Then one day I went to use a bookmarked site, and it timed out and told me I wasn’t connected to the internet, which troubleshooting seemed to confirm. However, I was still able to pull my email with Outlook, and Facebook, YouTube, and Wikipedia still functioned normally; all other bookmarks timed out as did any websites that I would manually type in. I still had Internet Explorer on the machine and it functioned normally, leading me to believe it was a problem with Chrome. On a whim, I deleted all my Chrome extensions and everything then worked perfectly.

Now, a few weeks later, the same situation is back. The LTE modem seems to be working normally, as does the router. My router setup says it’s talking to the modem but is not getting an internet connection. Yet email and the three websites mentioned above work normally. Rebooting the router and modem makes no difference, nor does reverting to any and all default settings. Internet Explorer now has the same issues.

Any ideas? This one has me stumped…

What is your firewall?

Most firewall software nowadays puts your local network and interface into a "friendly" group.  If the internet connection changes, the s/w may interpret that as a hijack. 

Secondly, try a different browser and see what ahppens.  Opera is a great choice, FYI.

Take a sledge to the thing and get something with Win 7. ;D

I'd check the firewall exceptions. Make sure there is one for the home group, and for Chrome, or whatever browser you want to use.

Probably a dirty connection.

Running the whole mess through the dishwasher will solve your connectivity issues.

Try Chrome in Incognito Mode to bypass extensions, settings, etc. that might be causing issues. You can do the same with IE/Edge (inPrivate).  Chrome also has a 'Reset' option under Settings > Advanced Settings at the bottom which will give you a mostly clean slate.

Nine times out of ten browser issues are due to malware. What antivirus are you running, is it up to date, and have you run a full scan recently?  Try downloading and running Malwarebytes free version as well:  https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/

Believe me, going full-on Office Space on this thing has been a thought.  >:( I had reservations buying the damn thing with W10, and can say after a year and a half that I'd prefer 7....

I'm running McAfee for antivirus, which turned up nothing. Malwarebites too. Also did a reset on Chrome, no change. I'll have to try Incognito Mode and see if that has any effect, as well as look at the firewall situation.

Stay tuned, I can only get on here during work hours.....  :P

Also, to check connectivity run a tracert for the sites that time out. That bypasses your browser, and determines actual connectivity of your network.

Still running W7 on the 6-odd machines I take care of.  I test-drove first W8, then W10, and went right back to W7 in both cases.  Anyway...

I have the same problem now and then, usually involving the amount of imbedded flash-player crap on any particular webpage.  My alternate is Firefox, I don't trust anything from Google, let alone Microsoft.

I recently ditched FF because they, in all their infinite wisdom in trying to protect me from myself, wouldn't let me use my saved passwords on sites they deemed insecure.
