Title: Well it had to happen eventually... (hurt monster)
Post by: A.duc.H.duc. on July 22, 2008, 08:12:33 PM
Just a quick ride up to Starbucks tonight, just to stretch the monster's legs.

I was inside for about 2 minutes when a guy by the window yells, "Hey, some guy just ran into your bike"

S.O.B. My heart sank so fast. I turned around and there she was, lying on her left side...

So the old guy apparently didn't see it parked behind him, just backed up to get out of his parallel spot, and bumped it. I actually had to chase him down the street.

So... no tank ding, so that's good, though it did chip the paint on the tank.

The standard, bent clutch lever, trashed my bar end mirror, broke the left footpeg off, muffler on the side is scuffed a bit, and the bars have an ever so slight tweak to them.

So sigh... paint is the worst thing I guess.

Yeah, he said he didn't notice, I wouldn't normally believe that, but he's an older guy, he seemed a bit out of it, I almost think he was probably on some meds.

Bummer man... Just happened to me last Sunday.  Someone mentioned about checking these tabs that are welded on the head-tube?! if they break, dealer would total the bike?! Not quite sure on the details, but I'm sure some here will know the right answer.  Glad you were able to get the guy too!  Hope you get the bike fixed soon!

Fortunately I had the steer tube locked, so that took the brunt of it, not the steering stops.

Dude, at least you weren't on it when the old guy backed into it!  It could always be worse.  Keep us posted on how the newfound project unfolds.

Well annually might be a bit much, but I'm definitely on board with testing as we age, maybe every 2 or 3 years.

I know, it's hard to believe he didn't notice, I mean he knocked it from right to left, so he had to push it all the way over the kick stand.

-Sounds like the bike escaped without any serious "injuries"..

At least you saw him!! Imagine if you were paying for your coffee or whtever and just missed the guy, then you would've been REALLY ticked off!!  >:(

Good luck!!

Sorry to hear about the crunch.  A couple more things to check (because my bikes have fallen over so many times)...

-the kickstand may be bent
-the index pin on the left handlebar controls may have broken off.  It's a little plastic pin that fits into a hole on the handlebar.  You definitely don't need it, but you may want insurance to pay for a new set of controls if it broke.

The kickstand is bent, I guess I forgot to mention that earlier.
The pin is gone, but that's because I cut it off years ago when I was running different bars.

old is a state of mind, not being. you can live for many years and not be "old", full of life and sharp as a tack. hence why i hate old people.

ps-how do you know what age i am?

depends on the municipality, county reg.s, state bylaws, and federal mandates.  so basically no.   ;D

Just be glad you weren't on it. A lady clipped me on my bike and claims that I crossed the double yellow line and now the insurance company is dragging their feet on the bike and my personal injuries.

Lame, I'm sorry.

Looks like my insurance isn't covering it anyways, so I've got to sue his insurance for property damage coverage since the bike was parked.

here! here!  I've already told my wife to take my keys if this happens.  Of course, she'll have to catch me first but...

My retired parents live in a city with a high population of geriatrics and they tell me stories of the ancients careening off of cars and curbs in the parking lots on a regular basis.

Did you get all of his info and insurance?  I contacted the insurance company of the guy who hit me and dealt with them directly!  It was no contest because he admitted to it too.  Should have a check next week.  I don't think you'll have a hard time at all.  Good luck!

This is true, at least it was for my Monster which I got a SWEET deal on (salvage title). The stop still works and I could have it welded, but instead I just adjusted the screw! One more time down and it will break off. The frame is fine as far as I can tell.

I've learned so much about bike insurance claims over the years and it's amazing what will total a bike. Just remember you can buy back from the insurance company.

Good luck and sorry to hear about the incident.

PS - My bike was in accident #2 when some clueless b*tch in an SUV backed into all three of out bikes (mine was in the middle). She had 3 car lengths, but since she was busy screaming at her kid she gunned it in reverse and our bikes went over like dominoes!

Bummer of a story there.

The steering stop is fine, as I said earlier, I had the column locked, so the bars weren't going to move.

I didn't get his insurance information personally, but the police officer did, there's a full police report, he admitted fault, and he recieved a ticket.

I should be able to get a copy of the report today, or monday.

You guys need to get out of the cities more. My mother died at age 87 but was legally blind for the last 10 years of her life. She could see to move around & even watch TV if she got really close, but she had the white cane, books on tape & all the other official stuff. The state and feds considered her blind. However, no one made her turn in her driver's liscence or car. My wife & I took the car away which she wasn't very happy about it, but she died with a current driver's liscence.

Everyone should be retested if they're hitting things and not realizing it.

That woman who was screaming at the kids could have backed over a child on a bicycle!!!  She needs to be retested.

Driving is a privilege.  Not a right!

the exact same thing happened to me here in MI last year-- once you get the police report file a claim with his insurance company on his policy number.   I got a check for helmet, bars, controls and a clutch lever, his insurance (state farm) didn't even put up a fight.

+1 on the retesting annually.

I was sitting outside on the patio of a coffee shop one evening and an old guy ran right into my truck, which was parallel parked on the street. He never even backed off it. When I approached him and mentioned it to him, his response was "so what...i had to get 14 feet from the corner...if you don't like it, move"

If he wasn't old I would have smacked him  [bang]
