Title: Chain Size and Rear Sprocket Help?
Post by: ltnuke on July 23, 2008, 08:14:18 AM
This is kind of a newb question but what chain size do I need for my 695?  I do street riding only and I need to replace my chain, I'm up over 19000 miles on my bike.  It looks like my choices are 520, 525 and 530?  Any body have links to a place that you recommend I order from?

Also, I think I'm going to need a rear sprocket soon.  Recommendations as far as where I should order from?  I already have the 14t front so I'm thinking of leaving the size the same.

Thanks for any help!

ca-cycleworks or motowheels would have chains and sprox for your bike.  520 will job the job just fine.

If you're replacing the chain, you should replace the sprockets as well, especially with that mileage.  Generally they are treated as a suite.

Anything over a size 520 on a 695 probably isn't obtainable and is also overkill  ;)

If you're getting a new chain, you should replace both sprockets at the same time.  Any time I get all new sprockets, I'll get a 15-tooth front and then get a rear sprocket with the right number of teeth to produce the gearing that I want.  When I changed them on my ST2, I went from 14/42 to 15/44.  A 45 would have been an exact match for the sprockets I was replacing, but I wanted slightly higher gearing and what I have now is pretty close to perfect.

I would strongly recommend that you go with a 15 on the front and figure out what rear sprocket gives you the gearing that you like.  Probably three teeth larger than the current one will be just what you want.

If you buy it all from California Cycleworks, they'll make sure that you get the right length of chain and correct size on everything.
