Hi everybody. The vertical piston exhaust pipe goes very close to my left leg. In stop and go traffic it starts to burn my leg. Is there a heat shield or something I could put on there? All I can think of is exhaust wrap tape. I never did exhaust wrap tape before and don't know how much it would help or how hard it is to do. I have a 2000 Monster 900. Thanks for any ideas!
The wrap works better than a shield imo and is not hard to do, just tedious. You can use clamps or safety wire to secure it. You could do both too.
If you're going to wrap it, don't wrap over the slip-joint:
a) Makes it a royal pain in the ass to disassemble the pipes.
b) If that slip joint is wrapped over and it leaks, the exhaust pressure is blasting fiberglass fragments everywhere.

Experience talks ;)
c) the pipes will become rusty if/when the wrap gets wet
Thanks for the help! I watched some videos on exhaust wrap and it seems pretty simple. I might just do that short stretch between the vertical piston and that 4 joint connector. Seems like a nice, short, hidden piece for my first try. I have a couple of questions though.
#1) There is some kind of plugged hole in that pipe right about where my ankle is. Maybe a possible spot for a sensor or something? Should I wrap OVER or AROUND that plugged hole? Should I cover it with the heat wrap tape or leave it exposed? I'm not sure what it is so I can't tell.
#2) Does anybody have sources for heat wrap tape? I only need a short piece. I would like to find something that matches the bare metal colors of the engine. One thing I like about the monster is the metal colors. I actually LOVE the color of the exhaust system. I'm not eager to cover it up.
Thanks again!
Cover your legs. Much easier [cheeky]
The plug is for diagnostic purposes. If it's easy, leave it exposed.
Always look/ask sponsors first [thumbsup] (Tip: MotoWheels have this wrap)
, but seriously... cover your legs instead 8)
