As a WOMAN, i think a medium would be a good size to fit most women.  Girls are a different story.... ;:|

I think small is the safest bet, since most girls are small. However, medium is more versatile, and realistically if this girl is wearing no other gear, safety is not really your concern anyway...

I am going to get other gear and I am concerned about safety, it's just that head size is hard to generalize...
btw, thanks for the responses time for me to go to the kegger  [beer]

I wear an XS, took a friend for a ride and she didn't fit into my spare, needed an M.

And btw, if anything, passengers should wear more gear than the driver.

When I worked for Harley (stop that snickering!) and ran a rental fleet, I found that most of the women fit the small and x-small helmets.  Very few fit well in the larger sizes.  If you're looking for a helmet as a spare to accomodate any woman you might take for a ride, I'd recommend a small.  Snugger is better (and safer) than loose.  Which applies to many more things than helmets!  I'll stop now as this is a family program.

If it is an ocassional thing, there are some pretty cheap full faced helmets you can pick up in all sizes, at like $40 in the clearance section.... the only down side is that they are much heavier than the good helmets.... I found that women with a lot of hair need a medium to keep it all under wraps and unless they have a bobble head, the medium fits all the rest of them safely too.

What kind of woment do you normally date?

someone 5 foot 1 and petit is probably gonna swim in a Med

An amazon queen will probably not be able to squeeze into a Small

Just buy a small and medium off fleabay and be done with it

Of course If you are a Med then buy another nice helmet for you and keep em in rotation.

I wouldn't make that kind of assumption...I am 5'4" and wear XS, my mom is 4'11" and her head is far bigger than mine (medium bicycle helmet).
Not sure if she has a giant head, or I have a pinhead. [cheeky]

A helmet that is the wrong size will not protect a noggin in a crash at speed.  It will really only protect against light taps.  The reason is that if the helmet is too big, the head collides with the protecting material inside the helmet with a much smaller footprint.  Part of the way a helmet protects is by compressing the materials in the helmet.  The second component is that it takes the single point of impact and spreads that impact over a much larger area of your head.  If the helmet doesn't fit properly, the single point of impact will just transfer to be another single point of impact on your head.  Does that make sense?
