How hard are they to install?

Cycle Cat and LSL have a slight rise to the handlebar (1-2 inches). Others like the Vortex clip-on do not have any rise, but you will be leaning forward like a 1098. Make a template where the holes are on your handlebars and then use that to drill new holes in the clip-on bars. With a bunch of fiddlin' around, it will likely take you half a day or more.

Here is the thread and a drawing.

How do I remove the Top Triple?

- remove 2 speedo button nuts then remove the speedo.
- loose the 3 pinch bolts on the top triple. 1 on each side next to the tubes, and 1 right on the center in between the key module and triple tree big nut (turn your bar all the way to the right, i think... then you'll see it). you don't have to remove them... just loosen them.
- remove headlight
- undo bolts that hold air sensor bracket.
- carefully remove the 2 rubber posts that hold the speedo.
- after you loosen everything bolted to the top triple, you can just slide it up.
- make sure you don't loosen the lower triple pinch bolts. if you do, you have to realign the forks... pain in the @$$...

when you're putting things back on, make sure you retighten everything with proper torque specs... specially on the fork pinch bolts. over tightening can damage the tubes.

again, sorry if i miss any step. good luck [thumbsup]

- Go to your parts specialist and buy new head bearings ready to change <- higly recommended.
- Place bike on rear stand/race stand you need to have bike supported upright. <- essential.
- I like to remove fuel & tank so bike is easy to work on & I dont scratch it <- this is optional.
- Remove handle bars/clip-ons and everything on them, you can keep some things still bolted to it. Just take care not to damage anything, specially the cables.
- Remove instrument cluster & headlight/brackets totally. Move cables out of way.
- Remove the choke cabel (if yours comes throught the middle of the clamp)
- Measure and write down, how far up the forks come out over the top clamp. As you need this distance when your resintalling the forks. (Or you can measure from the bottom of the bottom clamp to the end of the fork outter tube etc. the idea is to have reference for later on.)
- Raise the front of the bike. This probably best done either via straps from the ceiling grabbing at the front of the frame (use a rag to protect your frames paint) or via a hydraulic jack under the horizontal cyclinder of the engine, or combine both. Some how you need to get the front up but leave the wheel, forks & tripples alone. THINK SAFETY HERE.
Then...
**- > Short cut but more brute force way is.
a) Remove brake line or calipers (carefull as their tightly bolted & fluid is paint damaging) Undo the speedo cable too.
b) Start slowly/carefully undoing the bolts holding the forks on.
c) When all loose on top and lower clamp, forks will drop out, with the wheel & all!! (you've been warned) They may need a litte gentle tapping from above to release them if their stick in there.
d) The upper & lower tripple should now be bare with nothing attached.
e) On the back of the upper clamp there is an allen bolt that sits in a reesesed hole, undo it.
f) Start removing the upper clamps shim & nut on the top clamp. This shouldn't be overly tight, so a pair of adjustable pliers should remove it. NOTE THE ORDER OF ASSEMBLY.
g) There is another flange under the triple, undo it. Again, note order of assembly.
h) When all is done, the top tripple lifts off and bottom falls out. Take note that the bearings inside will be greasy & probably dirty/rusty.

** -> The not so rushed way is in steps a) & b) is to remove the front fender, wheel and brake calipers. Thus you can remove one fork at a time & not rush it so much.

- When reinstalling its important to remove the old bearing (both on the stem & inside the steering tube on the frame, you can just nock out the half inside the steering tube with a long punch or sacrafice a cheap flat head screwdriver ;D.), the refit the new bearings. Use a piece of block wood to nock in the new bearings. Use bearing grease to regrease the new bearings.
- Reinstall is then the reverse of above, note that certain bolts need to be tourqed on correctly a search on here will reveal that for you.
- When I did this I followed a Haynes manual. Its a good idea to get one (good book stores) to help you along. You will also learn heaps about your bike too.

Hope this helps. - Chris
