I have a 2013 monster 796 that I bought just 2 months ago from a private party, has 12400 miles, I've used it only about 200 miles, was running fine then out of the blue the check engine light came on when I started bike but continued to run fine for another 30 miles, the code on the dash says stepp error, now it starts but wont idle unless it hold the throttle but when I turn off the bike the fuel pump stays running and it only stops after removing the ecu 5 amp fuse, will stay off until next time I turn on the ignition then it continues to prime even without trying to start it, I've disconnected and cleaned the stepper motor plug and no help, still stays on, I've ordered a used stepper motor from ebay and awaiting till it arrives but doesn't make sense that the stepper would cause the fuel pump to remain on, it is the pump because I loosened the tank and will stop if I disconnect the fuel pump, thank you in advance.
There's a relay that controls the fuel pump , either that's stuck 'on' or it's being powered up incorrectly.
Try replacing that relay first.
thank you for fast reply, bench tested relay and it works fine, the relay has a constant +12v and its fed the negative by the ECU, I just found out it does turn off in about 5 minutes after turning off switch but stays on if key is on the on position even with engine not running, there must be some other input to the ECU that controls the fuel pump relay
To the best of my knowledge, the ECU independently decides when the fuel pump runs.
The ECU controls the priming cycle, triggered by Key On, ~ a 1 second runtime normally.
Otherwise, the ECU only enables the pump when the engine is actually turning over, either cranking or running, triggered by a signal from the crank sensor.
wow, sounds like my ecu is malfunctioning then, strange that the stepp sensor and the ecu would go haywire on the same day, I guess ill wait till the stepp sensor comes from ebay and see if it takes care of the stepp error, thanks for your help
Stepper motor error is being thrown by the ECU, so indeed the ECU is looking like the perpetrator.
Best to get it looked at with diagnostics before buying more hardware.

sure enough, slapped on on ecu from ebay and bike now running like new, fixed stepper motor and fuel pump issues immediately.
