Title: Steering head bearing replacement - tools required
Post by: ian48th on August 26, 2019, 08:03:12 PM
I need to replace the steering head bearings on my 2000 M900Sie.  It sounds like a do-able job for an amateur like me, though I have a few questions and didn't find a tutorial for this in the Tutorials section.  I could have a local shop do the job, but I figure it would be a good bonding experience for me and the bike.

I don't have any specific tools for this yet.  Seems like I should get a bearing puller and driver.  Do you think this would be the right thing to get?
Motion Pro Steering Head Race Puller - 08-0545 - https://fortnine.ca/en/motion-pro-steering-head-race-puller-08-0545
Motion Pro Steering Head Bearing Race Driver - 08-0550 - https://fortnine.ca/en/motion-pro-steering-head-bearing-race-driver-08-0550

I'm in Canada, so ordering from these guys is way cheaper than getting slammed with shipping and customs when ordering from the states.
And the bearings:

I've got the factory manual, which describes the procedure, so there's that.  Otherwise, is it very tricky?  I've never done steering head bearings before.

Lastly, and I'm sure this on in the forum somewhere, how best to support the front end?  I've got a Pit Bull rear stand.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

In the end, I took the bike to a local shop where they did the job for less than I expected, so it worked out well.  One of these years I'll have to do this again and will hopefully get the tools and do it myself.

The bike feels so much better now!
