Title: 2002 M750 Starter Issue
Post by: mtnduc on September 09, 2019, 02:41:06 PM
Battery is fully charged, recently like 0 miles serviced, started fine 2 days ago.
When I hit the starter button I get a chunk sound from the starter and it won’t engage just goes chunk...chunk ...chunk.
Any suggestions??

DOA starter, solenoid, other.,,

First step is fully charge the battery and get it load tested.  Fully charged and good are not the same thing.

CCAs are good.
I’m guessing sprag.

Is the clunk coming from the solenoid or the starter?  If it is from the starter get the rear wheel in the air, put the bike in gear, turn the rear wheel to make sure the engine is free.

A bad sprag will allow the starter to spin without turning the engine.  My next step would be to either bypass the solenoid or apply battery voltage directly to the starter.  Keep in mind you are bypassing all safeties when you do this.  Make sure the bike is in neutral. My guess is either you have a bad solenoid or high resistance at the starter connection.  Before disassembling or buying parts

Yes this is done on a car, but it applies to your bike too.

Pulled battery, put on battery tender overnight.
Re-installed battery, fired right up.

Clunk was definitely coming from the starter.
Wheel turned freely.

Probably going to buy a new solenoid just in case.
