Title: Fork question for the pro’s
Post by: Pinion on October 30, 2019, 06:10:16 AM
I have 2 Showa adjustable forks, circa 2001
1 from a m900 sie
1 from a 900ssie
Are they the same inside?
Just wondering before I sell one and rebuild one

When you rebuild, would you share what you did, parts used and where obtained, and any other pertinent info?

Absolutely

Not a pro, but anyway ....
Are they 41 mm or 43 mm inner legs?

Not necessarily the same.

Are they the same length externally?

The ss housing is longer to provide for clipons

Both 43

Well,

if both are 43 mm, and both are adjustable, then they are similiar inside, but the total and relative lengths of the cartridge tube and cartridge rod are different.

And they indentically limited as far as function / performance is concerned (though better than the non-adjustables).

Just wondering about valving
If one is worth rebuilding over the other
M900sie came with Ohlins remove reservoir, so did they ohlins inside front fork, or same across the board for the Showa adjustable

All the Showa valves are basically the same...restrictive.

Racetech will be your friend, but their recommended stacks don't necessarily work for everyone.

This^

I've got a set of long forks that must be SS units, came off an '01 M900S oddly enough.
They're shorter travel compared to the Monster units.
Nice for above-the-triple clipons.
They'll suck for tubular bars.

Yes they do, was running those on the monster I slapped together and was my daily

Based on that, and my experience, selling the longer ones and rebuilding the shorter
Thanks all for input. Will post progress and pics

So after all my exhausted research, looks like I’m going the way of total cartridge assembly replacement.
Have to decide which 1 of 3, Andreani,Axxion, or race tech. Have pricing for 2 of the three, will be contacting race tech for theirs

What were the prices for the three options? Why did you go with your selection?

Race tech didn’t have a complete cartridge assembly for my fork, the GR2 is 1300
Axxio AK-2 is 1099 but not complete assembly.
Andreani 105/D32E is 655 delivered which includes fork cap. ( the “E” means evo, which means Andreani has improved the 105/D32 so they  are current with tech, the 105/D32 is still available at a bit of a discounted price) Literally plug and play, remove old cartridge assembly, drop in new. It comes from Italy so there is a wait time.

A lot of really good reviews on Racetech and Andreani, not so many reviews on the Axxion. The bottom line on performance was to greatly improve over stock. Consider the cost and time to rebuild and revalve myself, and my intentions for the bike.
What I took into consideration was the various types of bikes these components were used on, the reviews of actual riders, and what I’m using my personal bike for. There seems to be more street riders using the Andreani and really liking the performance, race tech gets high reviews from the track bikes. (As well as street)

Ok, getting ready to tear down my forks
Total rebuild with Andreani cartridge
I have looked through this site as well as o there and can’t find a blow by blow rebuild of Showa adjustable forks.
So I will try to do what I can, with a hopeful interruption by those who know better. Stay tuned

Doing the install on the Andreani

Big difference between components 20yrs old vs new tech

Good luck. I know some on HDForums.com (Harley) have used Andreani drop cartridges and have been pleased with them.

Good stuff here, probably more informative than a lot of the suspension threads I've been able to dig up. I have the Showa non-adjustables and have been looking into some light suspension stuff, its a slippery slope with info vs. what's available and compatible. I've been thinking front and rear springs but then I see this and wonder if I should just spend a little more, which leads to a little more, which leads to my cheap bike not being cheap anymore.
