I just purchased a Shoei helmet. I would like to get some sun protection. The smoked visors are about half the cost of the mirrored visors. Does anyone know if the mirrored visors give better visual acuity compared to the smoked visors? Or is the mirror to assist with temp management?

I have mirrored in Shoei and light smoked in Arai. The mirrored is only light smoke, and they don't add anything optically. I got them because I wanted to look cooler...and I had to pass a certain $ to qualify for free shipping on the helmet.

I like the cool looking part! 8)
I got my first mirrored visor and it looks awesome! I love it. I went for the gold iridium look:

The one for my helmet is a bit darker then a light smoke, kinda between light and dark smoke.
I haven't found any visual differences for myself, but +1 on the cool factor...you can get pictures like this:

Nice lid - I have red graphics in my helmet and was wondering what gold would look like.

That is a great shot of the road rising to meet you in the reflection of your visor. Cool factor +11
if you have graphics, get mirrored.... no question.
i have the metallic black solid shoei, so i went with dark smoke. just looked better than mirrored
I have a flat black Scorpion with a silver mirrored shield. No other reason than the cool factor!

Honesty, the pictures don't do it justice. In the pics it has a blueish tone (which does exist in person) but that changes based on the angle.
There are a few other pics of the helmet here:

GL w/the purchase and post up some pics once you get it.
I got the mirrored visor that blocked the most light . I have senstive eyes( blue ) often on a bright , sunny day in Summer I will get a Migraine Headache from the bright sun .
So what I have done is get (I believe ) a Silver mirrored Visor ( also have a Gold one ) and wear a pair of Oakley Sunglasses w/ Black Iridium Polarized lenses which only let 10% light through them.
I also have Dark Smoke , but the Mirrored ones block the most light and ...look the coolest too i think.
any problems with the mirrored finish at night?

Yes, you can't see shit! Even the speedo cluster is hard to look at.
I went with the silver mirrored. Thanks for all the input. I like. 8)

Is the mirror finish worse than a smoke tinted screen?

I would say yes. I'm not sure if it's the mirror finish on the type of visor/brand I own, but it definetly seems darker (more grayish hues) then my dark smoke visor. Like I said, the cluster is difficult to look at night and there is generlly less visibility.....
Your mileage may vary but for me the change was evident.
I believe the mirrored visor is a bit faster no?

It actually gives you 1.5bhp at the front wheel.

Are you serious about the 1.5 hp increase at the front?
Just asking because I put on a 33.5 up there and need the extra hp to outrun the back.

Sorry, my finger went spasdic
mirrored is slick.
but if you have a black helmet, you should go with a black visor.
and a black jacket, and gloves.
and then turn your head and stare directly at drivers, while stopped at traffic lights. maybe wag a finger at them if they've been doing something stupid.
;D
