Title: 2002 m620 BATTERY DRAIN
Post by: HOMUTH on January 18, 2020, 08:44:39 AM
Hi

there is a small flashing amber light in the lower part of the gauge cluster on my 2002 m620  - not sure what is for possibly anti-theft and it is not wired through the main fuse block on the right side of the airbox - anyways I have a very slow battery drain when bike is in winter storage & suspect this is the cause - is there a way to disable the light & whatever it's hooked up to?

Thanks!

I think the general practice for winter storage is to remove the battery and keep it decently warm on a trickle charger.

That blinking yellow LED is the indicator for the Immobilizer anti-theft system.
I suspect the battery loses charge naturally while sitting at a greater rate than that LED uses charge.

Monitor battery current while all systems are off and remove individual fuses to track down what is draining the battery.

Are you sure you have a drain?  Even disconnected your battery will self discharge from 2% to 10% depending on temperature.  Since your bike is injected your battery needs to have enough voltage to operate the computer and fuel pump as well as crank the engine to start.  A weak battery will not do that.

To confirm you have a drain hook an ammeter in series between The negative battery cable and terminal.  Ducati has no spec, but you want around 60 milliamps or less.  If more then start diagnosing.

We have a 1999 M750 (carbs) and a 2002 M620 (injected)

they are in unheated winter storage....on a warm day once a month or so I fire them up

the m620 (new battery) has always had a very slow drain while the m750 never has

I'm assuming it's the immobilizer system & was wondering if there is a way to disable it

Thanks

There is no way I know of to disable the LED, but if the bike stays parked for more than 48 hours the light should stop blinking to save the battery.  Anyway, can't say for sure about that LED, but indicator LEDs usually draw 20ish milliamps meaning about .5 amps a day.  It will take less power to start the 750 than the 620since it is carburated, has no computer and fuel pump and has lower compression.

I suggest not starting the bikes unless you are going to ride them.  All you are accomplishing is contaminating the oil and probably drawing more from the battery than you are putting in.  Better is to fog the cylinders and occasionally put the batteries on a smart charger.  Disconnecting the battery on the 620 would help.
