Title: S2r1000 oil cooler hoses/pipes
Post by: Alexaskmo on July 03, 2020, 09:57:04 AM
Hey!

Modding my s2r1k quite a bit and now I’m just frustrated with the oil cooler hose/pipe being routed over the belt covers. I want to route it through the other side just like the Multistrada 1000ds.

Anyone done this and can advise? Where to get custom pipes in Europe, length, what they’re actually called. I have no idea what I’m doing but I’ve managed to still do quite a bit on this bike :)

Cheers,
Alex

I'd contact Fren Tubo in Italy... https://frentubo.it/en/faq/

Use the line from a HyperMotard 1100.  It does exactly what you’re after.

Easiest will be buy the Hyper lines like DS suggested. I made my own with AN fittings and adapters. I had an old thread, maybe on the old board, documenting what the thread pitch is for the adapters at the engine and cooler. Really easy and I think cheaper than Hyper lines, but it requires some work.

Awesome! Thanks both for the tip on the 1100 hyper!!! Will look into it immediately! So excited! :)

Thread into the case & into the cooler are M14x1.5.  You can get the AN adapters and lines for cheaper, but you’ll have to build 2 lines versus just getting the 1 from an 1100 HYM as it looks the same.

Also: the correct adapters are M14x1.5 to AN-6 in case anyone intends to build their own lines.

Thanks Stew!

All this info is great, you are making me want to make my own :)

I’ve built a few sets over the years.  For me now though, I just buy OE lines.

Sooo... I now finally got around to installing the new fren hypermotard lines on the s2r... this is what happened. What are your thoughts? This happened while screwing in the hose line into the cooler, there was a lot of resistance and then snap.

You need a new cooler.
In the future, always put a wrench on the cooler while installing a hose.

Can’t tig weld that back together?

Perhaps it could be Tigd but I’m no expert. Would probably be cheaper to by a used cooler honestly. Tig would also require a pressure test since this has oil running through it.

AFAIK, that's a furnace brazed joint and thus not weldable.

I'm sure it's done regularly in New Zealand, so if you're there you may be in luck.

Otherwise, I'd not even mess with it, get a good used one and move on.
Make sure that 'good used one' is clean.

Alrighty! What do you mean by clean?

Oil coolers that were on a motor that ate a rod bearing get sold.

You don't want that cooler.

This.
You need two wrenches.
NEVER try to tighten (or loosen) gas /oil fitting with just one wrench.

So many costly beginner mistakes, makes me so freaking irritated! This project has unnecessarily cost me 100s dollars.

Ah well... now I know that as well...

A hard lesson but it will save you further distress the next time you're working on a similar item.

I learned that safety glasses are really cool,
by having a piece of rust sit in my eye overnight.
Makes it easy to remember.

Oh shit! Sound uncomfortable :)

I had a piece of plastic fly into my eye when using the dremelon a fender. I always wear glasses when working on metal but I just ignored safety with plastic and a tiny little dremel... not doing that again haha!

Buying a full face guard before the weekend as I’m going to be doing some paint stripping with brass attachements... heard a lot of people complain about those things flying into ones face and sticking to it... wtf!
