This is what my plate looks like after every ride.
It has obviously become a problem but it just recently started to happen. Is it possible that my suspension lowered somehow causing the plate to hit or is the angle of the plate bracket just not far enough out?
I was looking at the cookie kit today and it is about an inch or two tighter to the bike and has more vertical angle than the one I used.
Any ideas?
I looks like your plate is not as far back as most of the kits place it. That, plus the lowered suspension & plate angle is not helping either.
I'm thinking that when you hit any sort of bump/pothole/speedbump your suspension travels far enough for the plat to hit the wheel and hit it hard enough to bend it. Its not unheard of at all.
As to a solution, I don't have any other than to relocate the plate.
:o
wow...
that CaN'T be good for your rear tire...
are you riding with a passenger by any chance?
I ride solo most of the time.
Its just strange how it started happening out of no where. I'll see how the cookie kit works.
Is your plate a t a 90* angle or what?! WTF dude!
You need to angle it outward a lot more!!
I've crunched mine twice. I thought I had enugh rear tire clearance but it just takes one good pothole or speedbump to do it. [roll]
Take a rubber mallet to it and it will straighten right out. [thumbsup]
Time to hit the gym, or go on a diet ;) (sorry couldn't resist)....
The plate is not at a 90 degree angle, but when it hits the tire going at 75 miles an hour it tends to shift a little. funny how that works. I usually keep the plate at 40 degrees or lower.
I was ticketed a few weeks ago for an illegible plate because the angle was so severe. He also slammed me for three other license plate violations, Guy was a dick, but thats besides the point. The point is, what seems to be plenty of clearance (and yes, Ive bent it back on multiple occasions) isn't.
This is the kit:

The violated bracket is basically beyond repair at this point. But it matches the rest of the bike!
i had my plate mounted up by my shock, in front of the tire. If the tire would hit it nothing would happen but a little paint would be rubbed off. Looks like your tire could catch the leading edge of your plate and destroy it.
Sounds like the last thing you need is another cookie.
ZING!

That is where I had my plate mounted for a very long time. I even routed the light to it. Just last weekend I got a ticket for it because the po po couldn't see it.
I now have it mounted it in a similar spot to the OP. I hope I don't end up with the same issue!
I got a ticket for mine being out too far on my S2R... then I bend it down... first bump I hit and the plate gets smashed into the tire. Oh well. It was time to get an 848 anyway. ;D

Ive been pulled over several times with it there. It was very visible. didnt even have a light on it. I guess it just depends on the cop.
for being tucked away my plate has a good viewing angle. Unless your a foot off the ground or right behind the bike you can see it. VERY VERY visible for a person in a car behind you because of the distance they have to stay back.

Planning on mass producing anytime soon?
ill make them if people will buy them. I had made an aluminum undertray but i can make them work with the stock undertray.

One of the great things about this type of plate is...
i can run those high speed ez pass tolls and if i miss a redlight by a 1/2 second, the camera cant catch my plate. ive been flashed about 8 times, still no ticket in the mail.
Mine is 16 gauge Stainless Steel though.

Yes....this is most likely your problem. If you didn't have the support brackets behind the tag, it would be much more obvious that the tire is smacking the cr@p out of the tag. It would probably look more like this one from my ST2.....

BTW, I have since gotten rid of that tag. My best friend had "ERTS" on his bike and we'd get some interesting looks when we rode side-by-side with him to my right. ;)
Has anyone installed the plate on the left side of the bike, mounting the plate holder to rear axle?
I know, it's a bit HD / Custom-style, but we have H U G E license plates here in Finland (Check the pic if you don't believe ;)).

On my old 620i.e. after tail chop, I smashed my plate to rear wheel and my rear hugger went to pieces (Thank God it was plastic). Then i bended the plate a little bit more outside, so it wouldn't make contact with tire and what happened next, cops pulled me over and gave a ticket because they couldn't read my plate... [leo]
I haven't done a tail chop yet to my recent bike, because it has CF hugger and it's a bit too expensive to destroy...
So has anyone mounted the plate on the side, if so, pics pls.
ive been thinking about mounting my plate to the side. Id mount it where it was but i dont wanna cover up my custom swingarm, shock, or crossover pipe. decisions decisions
