I got off work today so excited to get home and ride the bike, so i hurried inside and changed into my gear and headed out to run a couple errands. i stopped at my first destination after about a 15-20 min ride and went inside to drop off a DVD i rented. low and behold when i come back outside there is an oil spot on the ground right beneath my bike! (about the diamater of the base of a beer bottle or coke can) :( i immediatly dropped my stuff and crawled underneath to investigate wtfx was going on. it seems that there is nice fresh engine oil leaking from somewhere up high in the same proximity as the spot where the rear exhaust loops to go back out the rear of the bike. :( :( With a saddened face i swept my leg over the bike and limped home on the 20 min ride watching for the oil pressure light to spark up. upon arriving home and looking again there is now oil blown back all over the side of the tire, chain guard, and other bits and pieces towards the rear of the bike including the exhaust piping. sorry for the non technical terms and description. this is my first ducati so im not exactly sure what all is up there and what exactly could be potentially leaking.
any ideas what might be going on up there? the bike doesnt even have 175 miles on it, and i just got it two weeks ago. the dealer will be getting a call from me tomorrow to setup an appointment for it to be checked out.
the bike is also doing some weird popping/backfiring from inside the intake chamber. at least im pretty sure it sounds like it is coming from inside the tank area. it happens occasionally when i am cruising in 5th or 6th gear for a few mins and then POP when i squeeze the clutch lever in to downshift for engine braking or slowing down. again, this is my first ducati but i had always heard the ducati motors were supposed to be buttery smooth? ???

I hope the dealer can fix that for you ASAP. There's nothing worse than being excited about such a great toy, then something like that happens. Keep us posted on how it goes.
The same thing happened with my new 696. Don't know if it's the same problem. I took mine back to the dealer and they said it was due to some nicks in the oil filter O ring. They put on a new filter, changed the oil, and it's OK now.
Sorry you're having issues with your 1st Ducati, but please go to the dealer and use that warranty. get it straight then enjoy the heck out of an Italian work of art.
+1 re the dealer.
Re the popping etc, you might want to read this: could be related.

thanks everyone! i put in a service request via their online system so i hope to hear from them this morning. i will mention something to them about the coils being possibly crossed as well.
is it possible for the coils to be crossed and the bike still run decent? it seems to run OK in the higher RPMs, but there is always something weird going on down low it seems like. again, i wish i had more experience with an Ltwin motor from ducati that way i would have an idea if this is just the normal powerband. ???
My bike runs the same way. I get good power but i notice that about 4000 i get a hesitation. it's really slight. i also get the popping. i'm hoping the coil wiring fix will change all that. by what everyone has said that did get the coil fixed we will have a dramatic change to our bikes.
It seems the only symptom is some surging at mid range cruise and higher engine temperatures. I"m not sure why reversed polarity would cause higher temperature at a constant speed, maybe closed loop reaction to misfire? Back in the olden days (points and condenser) reversed polarity meant weaker spark, but the vehicle would usually run.
These things happen, that's why you have a warranty!
My S2R 800 developed an Oil leak about 2 months after I collected it, It dripped oil from the front of the Horz Belt cover, it turned out to be a faulty O ring for the Cam shaft.
It's all fixed and sorted, it's painful I know (I waited for 2 weeks for a bloody O-ring to arrive from Italy)
Don't let it put you off, it's a new model and a new bike, There are bound to be some teething problems.
All I know is after a good long ride on my S2R, the 2 weeks it was off the road while under going surgery is a long distant memory.

The bike is at the dealer today and i should be hearing from them today. i will keep you guys updated, but he said from just looking at it he thinks it is the entire left side engine cover leaking. supposedly its just a liquid type gasket which may not have cured properly. i should be getting a call from them this afternoon with the official break down of whats goin on.
thanks for the posts on the topic, this shouldnt deter anyone from going italian. i REALLY love this bike in every way!
Can't wait to get one :) Its like waiting for bacon to cook!
turns out it was the left side engine cover. the liquid gasket didnt cure correctly and there were some spacey areas in the seal. all is well and i will pick up the bike tomorrow or friday pending what my work schedule is. woo hoo i cant wait to ride!
Right on ;D ;D Glad it wasn't anything major. Enjoy the bike!!
what about the coil?

what about the coil?
they said they are checking all incoming M696 and doing preventative measures to fix that problem. mine was already fixed so they say. :)
well have you ridden it???? is all ok now?
it was raining really bad today when i got off work, so im going to just pick it up tomorrow after work. just in time for the weekend! im real excited too the dealer sent me a surprise coupon in the mail for 10% off any set of termi exhaust! i wasnt expecting that!
Ducati of Charlotte in North Carolina is second to none if anyone in that area is in the market!
