Title: How to take the tank off
Post by: jani9000 on July 28, 2008, 08:25:28 PM
I'm taking my tank in for painting. Looks like taking it off is more work than I thought.

I'm assuming I need to take off the fuel lines from the engine end in order to drain the tank first, but they seem to be unreachable without taking the whole airbox out first. Is there a shortcut?

The bike is an '06 s2r800.

should have disconnects under the tank, right where the fuel lines come out of the tank...

the other option is to ride the tank mostly dry, and then be quick when you pull the lines off

It sounds like your not lifting the tank up. The airbox should not be in the way. you can remove the tank from the pivot point and lift the tank from behind and just unplug it there. Mark the tubes so you can put them back in later.

Ok, done. That wasn't so hard. I took the pivot pin out and got the tank pretty much upside down before taking the two lines off. That way I only got about an ounce of spillage, most of that out of the fuel hoses.

Now it's laying on its back in the garage with maybe a half gallon of gas in it. I hope the gas cap doesn't leak.

I tried draining it by holding it right side up over a siphon and a gas can, but not much came out.

Any tips for draining it? I know I could do it with some hose and a quick gas-tasting, but I don't have a piece of hose..

Leave it open for a few days and the gasoline will eventually evaporate. or you can just turn it upside down (thats what i did) then i lit it on fire and took a seat. smelled nice! or if you want to put the gasoline to some use, its great for cleaning grime and oil stains on your bike.

I would never EVER light any part of my bike on fire, specially the tank!  When you light it up, the expansion might deform the tank, your paint might get screwed up, etc etc.  (I know since you are painting it you don't care, but anyways...)

Every time I take my tank off, I siphon as much fuel as I can out of the tank, using a siphon pump like this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93290

You can get pretty much all of the gas out if you remove the gas cap, and take a look inside to make sure that the hose is all the way on the lowest spot in the tank.  After that, if you want to get rid of the exhaust fumes, I've heard of people running their cars for a while with a hose going from the car's exhaust to the opening in the tank.

Wow, common why would a guy like you even put information like that on the board?  HIS TANK IS PLASTIC for crying out loud!  What if someone reads this and doesn't know their tank is plastic??
