I've always run a Shoei. When I started riding I wore my dad's old RF-700 that was too big for me and then I saved up for half a year to get an X-11 (I wasn't working but it still wasn't cheap [roll]). I love my X-11 except for that nasty fogging problem and the fact that it has next to no ear pockets. It's time for me to look into a new helmet and I'm looking at the RF-1000 or a Scorpion.
So sell me on the Scorpion. I guess I'd be comparing to Scorpion 700? Cheaper price is nice. Equal safety ratings are nice. How about durability? Anybody have any little plastic bits breaking off after a couple years? I'd like to run the whole 5 year life span of the helmet. How's the little built in shade work for you? Is it far enough out that I can still use it with my glasses on? Are the ear pockets deep enough for me to put some speakers in? Oh yeah, I just noticed that Shoei helmets have a 5 year from purchase or 7 year from manufacture warranty. Not sure what it covers though.
Ironicly i have both of them and im weighed the same thing. Heres a short detail on both.
RF1000 Pros
Has more shell sizes.
Large is lighter (significantly) than a medium EXO700
Is MUCH quieter. The wind noise isnt annoying either
Can crack open the lens just a tiny hair for air to flow in.
Much more comfortable
Easy to break in (so make sure you get one that is a bit tight)
You can get a larger shell with smaller cheek pads
RF1000 Cons
It is a bit costly, though you can get a graphic that doenst sell well for cheap over at sport bike track gear.com
They are very odly shaped atleast to me, they look giagantic.
You cannot remove the inside liner (just cheek pads) so the stink is in there. But luckly there is fabreeze.
I dont like the graphics they offer. (EXO-700 has some SICK graphics)
EXO-700 Pros
My Favorite! Fog Proof lens. ITS REALLY FOG PROOF. Ive riden through several rain storms that lasted 1-3 hours and i also clean it with bullshit cloth, it is still fog proof, and has been for the past 4-6 months ive had it. Cant remeber when i purchased it.
VERY breathable. its got alot of vents and they all work perfectly
You can remove eveyr bit of padding and wash it in the machine, so it always stays fresh.
This one is a strange one, but the helemt smells like vanilla. Ive awashed it, filledi t up with water. the smell just doenst go away. Maybe its toxic vapor, i dont know, but it sure smells nice and its never going to go away.
Many graphics to choose from, but varying in prices. The most expensive graphic of the EXO-700 is just $100 shy from a shoei RF1000 with graphics that no one wants. Id get the shoei if i had to choose. Mine was only $129.99. I have the red Fury.
EXO-700 cons
Its really loud on the highway. it always sounds like theres a cop behind you becasue of the whistling.
Its a very heavy helmet, when you hold the rf1000 next to it, you realize why there is a price difference.
The lens is a pregnant dog to take out. the Rf1000 takes less than 2 seconds, sometimes the EXO700 takes more than 3 minutes of working at the switch.
Cheek pads dont break in as easily. Im still trying to break mine in. I can chew on a good chunk of my cheek if i wanted to. which sucks.
For the price, nothing beats the EXO, but if you can afford it, take the shoei. Both fit me just fine. I have the shoei in Large, (too big now, thats why i bought the exo) the EXO is medium, both fit the same (except for the cheek pads)

No experience with the RF, but I have a Scorpion Exo 700 I can comment on, to add to the above comments.
The lense will fog in the winter at a stoplight, but clears easily once you get moving again. The first notch on the visor is a ways out there, so you can't "crack" it in fine increments like you can other lids.
There is no inner shade on it, as there is on the EXO 1000, so I carry a smoked shield. Mere seconds to change lenses with their twist lock hinges.
DOT & Snell... makes me feel all warm and IZ_.
Ear pockets are pretty decent, though you'd need to pull the foam from those areas to get speakers in, and not a whole lot of foam in those areas to start.
As per the previous post... kinda noisy. I run in-earphones and music on longer rides.
I bought a solid flat, so I think it was pretty much their most economical. I agree that they have some decent graphics.
Hope this helps.
No, you have to sell yourself on it. You can have my in input, though. I will need to compare it to an Arai RR4 though.
The Scorpion is heavy compared to the Arai, but once it is on your head, or mine anyway, the heaviness disappears.
The Scorpion is as noisy as the Arai as far as I can tell. I find the Scorpion noise more annoying, though. Definitely an earplugs mandatory helmet.
Quality of interior materials is excellent, particularly for the price. Nothing has broken yet.
The shade is on the 1000, not the 700. Since every one's head and glasses are different bring your glasses to a store and try one on.
Bottom line is the helmet has to work for you. There is no best helmet.

Strange, ive ridden it in the cold. No issues. Ive also forcebly tried to fog it, no issues. Ive even taken it off in the bathroom, to take a shower after a rainstorm and after i got out, the inside was not fogged, the outside was though.
I love my EXO-700 and will probably never buy another helmet (except the EXO-1000) I Crash tested my first one and it took several good blows but my noggin came out unscathed. Mine smells like cherry vanilla. The cheek pads are adjustable, the inner foam in them is layered so you can remove a layer or 2 for a better fit if needed. The fully removable/washable liner is a must have here in Texas. Yeah it a little loud but I can still hear my exhast which is stock, so I guess it's not too loud. The ventilation is unbeatable, and the price is right [thumbsup]
I had a Scorpion and the only gripe I had was the difficulty in changing out the lens. It did really well in a crash test. The lens binding on one side did fail so by the end of the crash the lens was wiggling about. The crash, by the way, was about a 50 mph collision with a deer.
I cannot comment on the scorpion but I have the RF1000, its a nice helmet, and I really like it. Its not to heavy, yes its a bit more money but its your head we are talking bout.
As far as graphics, I have a solid color (monza red) so didnt bother me at all. Get what ever feels best on you. Try both on and see what you like.
I got an EXO-700 in Matte Black. Looks good, feels nice. A tad bit heavy I must say in comparison to an older Shoei I had. But for the 209.99 I paid (and $20 off at Motocycle-USA.com's website), so for $189.99 I don't care how heavy it is. You can use the saved money for bar-end mirrors.

I have both helmets, and I like both. The Scorpion fits a little better, but is considerably heavier. On the bike, I don't notice it so much because it is very aerodynamic.
The Scorpion's internal visor is handy as are the inflatable cheek pads. The visor swap on my Shoei is a snap, while the Scorpion is somewhat a pain in the ass.

So you have the EXO-1000, the EXO-700 does not have the internal visor or inflatable cheekpads.

Actually, I have both. Since I bought the EXO-1000, I rarely wear the EXO-700.
Hmmm, helmet harbor has a exo700 DP that has the built in sunglasses. They've also got a EXO400 DP that has the sun shade. Does DP signify "drop down" for their built in sunglasses? Looks like it's an external sunshade though and doesn't disappear into the shell of the helmet.
DP means double pane. It is a conversion kit, in other words, an add on. I have no idea how good it is since I didn't know it existed until you post.
Here is a link on the Scorpion site:

Ah, thanks for that link. I hadn't found the DP conversion kit by itself on the Scorpion site but I had noticed that the Scorpion EXO400 DP is listed under "snow helmets." Interesting...
Good advice with removing some foam from the cheeks. Perfect fit now. I like my Scorpion 700. I have had an RF1000 and liked it very much as well. Tuff choice but since I don't have a ton of extra money laying around I went with the Scorpion.
Never had a scorpion on my head ...but I have 3 RF 1000s and although I like my X11s and Arais better, the RF 1000s are very nice helmets. As you already know the visor switch is a snap.
Grapics are like anything else, if you like the way something looks then it looks good ...to you.
I always wear a helmet liner so my helmets look like new so I don't know what a dirty helmet looks like. The silk liner costs $15 dollars and takes 2 minutes to wash it out and hang it up after a ride and it's dry by the next day.
The strap has the traditional D Ring closure and an easy fitment to secure the loose end so it does not flap when you ride.
It is comfortable and it has a reputation for quality for over 50 years so I prefer to trust my brain to the proven helmet makers.
As nice as i'm sure the RF 1000 is, they don't have a graphic called the Crackhead. [beer]
not going to sell you on it get the RF-1000 had a scorpion always fell apart got me a arai and have had no issues
