Title: Lowering the front and rear end
Post by: OwnyTony on July 29, 2008, 03:01:32 PM
Do you lower the front end by sliding the forks above the triple or is it some sort setting on adjustable forks.  So if the top of your forks are flush with the triple and you lower your bike 1 inch, do you accomplish that by sliding your forks up into the triple so that 1 inch of your forks are now exposed above the triple (not flush anymore).

How do you raise the rear?  Is it that rod that sort of looks like a giant version of your shift rod where you screw/twist the rod until it gets longer?

yes you push the top triple through 1 whole inch. However you may run into alot of clearnce issues with the fender, wheel and oil cooler and possibly your heads. Radiator too if you have an S4R. I have mine at 9mm pass the triple (makes a big difference compared to flush with triple_ older monsters already have about 1/2 inch past the triple) Alternatively, you could get a longer spring, or make up for it in preload. Though this woulnt be ideal.

If you want to raise the rear, there is a ride height adjuster. You siimply twist it. but realize that you have totally changed the geometry of your bike if you lowered the front and raised the rear.

Thanks.  I thought so.  As to changes in geometry, I forget but for the s2r bikes there was some sort of a consensus that lowering the front an inch and raising the rear 2 inches made the s2r a canyon eater or something like that.

I just upgraded my forks to that of the s2r1000 (still need to respring for my weight) and getting in a 999 rear shock by end of week.

Any other pointers?

Yikes,,, 1 inch & 2 inches at back. I am no Pro on this,,,,,but,,,, that seems extreme.

The Rear adjuster is a pregnant dog to work with.

I have to verify this as this info was from the old board.  Maybe I have my measurements wrong or it could be cm instead of in.

Did mine, just loosen the triple clamps.  Beware!, unless you unload the the front shocks they will rocket up each by itself  becase they are under a pretty good preload.  I'd suggest using a worm clamp with a wrap of rubber to protect shock body and place it the correct distance from the triple (the amount you want to lower). Then when you loosen the triple clamps  the worm clamp(s) will limit the travel. Else if you overshoot it will be tough to recompress the shock body back down the triple.  Me, I was just real careful.

if you raise your rear and lower your front, yes your bike would turn in like maniac, but i doubt youd be safe on the highway if you hit a bump. I had my preload busted at one point and my forks sat 2 inches lower than stock. my turn in was pretty wicked, but i also had absolutely no stability past 55mph.
