i need some help from someone who has mounted and balanced their own tires before. if you can help me let me know. their is some money in it for you and great appreciation from me. the cheapest dealer i found was 100 per hour with a one hour minimum. [bang]
You might check with Randy McCarther(SP?). I think he has a touchless tire changer. Or try Cyclegear.
I have changed several tires my self and it is not too tough. I can't balance them though.
Another thing is how much you like your rims. I dinged the crap out of mine changing them on the S2R. I will pay $100 to get new shoes on the S4RS.
Swanny
you can get them off by hand without dinging them up...it just takes some planning ahead, and a few key tools. i did the SS wheels myself and got the tires back on without dinging the rims, and it was my first time. was a learning experience though. and i don't recommend trying to put your balance weights on the inside of the rim unless you're going to use some super-heavy duty adhesive. i'll help you do it if you like...it's a great time!! make sure to drink alot of tropicana OJ before hand...pref. 3 or 4 cartons...the kind that's made of plastic not the waxy cardboard stuff. and i have wheel weights, tire levers, and even 2x4s. add some soapy water and BAM!!! done.
Randy did a great job changing my tires last week. Apparently my rims are pretty well balance to begin with.
i was happy with the "pretty good" balance method. you can buy a balancing stand for not that much $$...or you can sort of eyeball it, if you have the axle in the rim, and have it between two level stands. the ones they sell have nice bearings that the axle sits in...and they're only like $150 or so...but i'm okay with just identifying the point on my rim where it is the lightest, put a couple weights on it, and see what it looks like then...rinse and repeat. i have every confidnce i will now get moto-flamed for having said that.
If you have the wheels off the bike, Wilzgarage in Plano does tire changes for $15/ tire and $30/tire on the bike. Tell Chad I sent you and he'll take good care of you.
Good luck!

I know where Chris is coming from though... he lives in Midlothian last time I checked and that's about a two day drive to Plano. [laugh] Going to Randy at Scott's place is only a one day trip! You can buy hard plastic protective rim covers from bike shops (especially if they handle dirt bikes). I used to have some when I changed my own tires a lot. Who knows where they are now? They are 3-4" long and slip over the lip of the rim to protect it from tire lever damage. They worked great!! I would use 2 or 3 of them and move them around the rim as I levered the tire on a bit at a time. I would also use GOJO hand cleaning cream as a tire lubricant. Mother of invention... just used what was sitting on my garage shelf. Hey, it worked! I would still take mine to a shop for balance. Was just saving money doing the knuckle busting stuff myself.
If you can swing it logistically/financially Randy is the way to go. Yes, he does have a no scratch hydraulic tire changer and computer balancer. He has changed many, many tires on BST carbon wheels and prides himself on never leaving a mark on anything. A set of BST wheels are worth more than some bikes. When he changed the tires on my GSXR1000 the rear wheel (minus the tire) was WAY off and out of balance. Just a bad production batch. He had to JB Weld a s#@t load of weight on the inside of the rim (where it wouldn't show) just to get the rim balanced before he put the tire on. He went to a lot of trouble, work and concern on the rear wheel to make it right. I guarantee you no shop would have put in half the effort he did and he didn't charge me any extra for it. He just wanted to make sure it was done right. How much is that worth to you?

hey, now, what are you trying to say??
actually the guys that we got our rim machine from at work sent me over directions for using it to mount my rear tire but nothing for the front. i know 2 wheel world off pioneer will balance them for $10 each. rich if your interested in making some extra cash give me a shout. i'll prob have to do it on a sat or sun. i would love to learn how to do this because everywhere i read they say it's easy.
yes brian logistics are key. logostics wise arlington motorsports would be the best but they want $110. how is it if bike tires are easier to put on than car tires do they charge more than the auto places. hell ams was the cheapest at $100. CAN U BELIEVE THAT!!

sorry man, but cash is not acceptable i'm afraid. i will, however, accept a tasty cold beverage as we work at it. not sure what your schedule looks like this weekend, but i think i might be free pretty much all day sunday if you wanted to mess with it. i can bring some stuff with me, but if you had a few sections of 2x4 around that would be awesome... one needs to be about 7' though if you have it...it comes in very handy for breaking the bead (which can be a pregnant dog by hand without a lever system). beyond that we just need some rim protectors aka plastic OJ bottles, and we should be set. i can bring along rim weights, jb weld if you want to put a couple on the inside of the rim, and a couple tire levers. never been to midlothian...a guy i used to work with is from there...would be a relaxing ride out there on the weekend. just let me know man.
ummm... dude, cyclegear will mount and balance tyres for 30 bucks..
rich it would be in 2 weeks b4 i can get to it. if cycle gear will do it for 30 a piece i may have them do it have to call them tomm. i'll get back to you.

If Cycle Gear does it, be sure they have the tires going the correct direction after they install--I'm just sayin'. ;)
Last time I was there, Bates (2?) was charging around $22 per wheel off the bike ( i don't think they remove wheels from bikes). They are off of 35E just north of 635 on the southbound side. FWIW.

firsthand experience? heh...the plano shop people seem okay, but yeah, i would rather just do it myself i think over having them monkey with my wheels. i remember the one time i had to take my s2r to a honda place after picking up a screw in my rear tire...and the service guy just stared at the rear nut at looked at me with this "wtf do you want me to do about it" look...they had to search for 30 minutes just to find a socket to remove the wheel...then proceeded with all kinds of shenanigans for actually "balancing" the tire...i don't think it was really balanced, though. the guy couldn't get a snug fit on the balancing machine...
anyway...just saying you don't always come out ahead with some shops. if i was going to pay *anyone* it would be 1) randy mccarter or 2) AMS. but i just like wrenching on my own stuff...it's fun to me.
+1 for Randy, he did an excellent job on my S2R rear.
Chris, GO SEE RANDY!!! Randy did the LYD also. He is quick, does a great job, and you can drink all of scott's beer while your there. [thumbsup] Just go see Randy!

Seriously, I've heard this advice from others when mentioning going there.
I do know that you have to take the wheels to CG off the bike.
there is something to be said for the fun and/or satisfaction that you get from doing something with your own two hands (sorry, drummer from def leppard)... i'm just sayin'... i sure as hell have broken a lot of things and wasted a lot of time and $$ by screwing things up, but to be honest, i think that's the fun part.

Sometimes I wave to people I don't know. It's very dangerous to wave to someone you don't know because what if they don't have a hand? They'll think you're
cocky. "Look what I got mothermake the beast with two backser! This thing is useful. I'm gonna go pick something up!"

I agree, half the fun of owning a scooter is tinkering, messing and working on them. Nothing cooler than to mount a part that just might make it better, then go out and ride it and feel just how much better it does make your bike work. That's when the big smile hits. You think "Yeah, I put that on all by myself. Figured out the screwed up directions, tackled crap they never told me about, made it fit right, no scratches or dings, used some new tools, got it adjusted right where I like it. Damn, it's great!" That's a killer feeling. Very satisfying to sit back in the garage, sip your favorite cold adult beverage and admire your handywork. One of the many perks of scooter ownership! [thumbsup] [moto] [drink]

Only if the bike starts ;D
ok so the guys that make our tire machine called today to see how my mount went. i told them i have not done it yet. they said when my tires get in they will come out and show me how to do them since so many guys at the dealer have bikes. how freaking awesome is that. now i just have to get a front stand (already have a rear) so i can run them over to two wheel world to be balanced for 10 bucks and i am through. quick question for you guys which LED'S r u using with your tail chop because mine may be in the works very soon.
I've got a front Pit Bull stand you can use but the logistics of getting it to you would be interesting since I live in Dallas by White Rock Lake and will be on vacation this next week. Check with me after the Aug. 10th if that isn't too late for you. Maybe I can hand it off to someone who hands it off to someone else who then gets it southwest to you! Stranger things have happened. [thumbsup]
Chris, Cookies Tail Chop kit for the license plate relocation kit (VERY cool, well-made kit), and a vendor on ebay for the LED brake light with integrated turn signals [thumbsup] It's been a while since I made this mod so I can't remember exactly who I got it from but here are three folks who carry what look to be the exact same thing for around 50 bucks:

I wasn't sure how I would llike the tail chop, but I can't imagine my bike without it now. The only adverse effect I've ever had with the chop was you loose the ability to mount many of the after market side bag components from manufacturers like Givi. Side bags may not be a concern for you, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.
The only complaint I have with the integrated turn signal and brake light LED piece is that after 25,000 miles, three of the 40 or so little LEDs are not lighting up at all. It's not enough to make the situation unsafe, but it is noticeable if you look at it.

way to be a rebel, dude....way to keep it real [long].
if any monster owners would be interested charles came up with the idea of me waiting until the 23rd to get my tires put on. i was told the remount on the rear has to go in a certain order. let me know if you would like to learn it and i am more than willing to wait so a class can be taught at ***'s otherwise i will prob just take it to the dealer and drop it off on sat. the 23rd is the first available sat where i would have abunch of time with nothing going on.
I'll try to make it on over there. [moto]
