Title: Is a Nichols crankcase breather better?
Post by: ejw24 on August 01, 2008, 08:48:57 AM
Is there a difference between the stock crankcase breather and the Nichols?  If not, what is the benefit of the Nichols?  I have the K&N breather filter on the stock set-up now, get a bit of oil mist on the filter when I ride hard, will the Nichols eliminate that?

the quality is definetly better, i was getting leakage around my breather because the plastic would spin in the metal body, so the oil would seep out the edges.  what you could try first is to maybe put a length of hose  on the breather then the breather filter, it will give the oil that gets by the flapper time to drain back into the engine before getting caught in the filter.

I have had a K&N attached directly to a Nichols on my 620 for at least 10K/mi. and it has never misted.

I've used Nichols, stock, and VeeTwo, and my best answer to your question would be: "I don't know".
You should definatly NOT attach the filter directly to the breather, it's job is to vent misty oil under pressure & you should put the filter at the end of a hose, the longer the better, but I make mine about 8-12 inches.

Thanks for the info.  I have mine on a hose, abut 6 inches long.  Going to work on a longer hose/set-up.
