Title: Tail bag
Post by: minnesotamonster on August 01, 2008, 10:40:59 AM
I'm looking at getting a tailbag so I don't have to carry a backpack with me everytime I need to carry something bigger than my cell phone.  I want something small and doesn't look huge on the back of the bike.  I only need to carry a few things such as work shoes, pants, and file folders.  Water proof would be a plus.  Looking to keep it under $100.  Any suggestions?

This one caught my attention. Any FHE?

TIA

The Cortech sport tail is very well reviewed by several DMFer.  I could find the original post, but most people like it a lot.

I did some searching and found a few reviews here and on TOB. I think I'm going to try this one out. I couldn't find any pictures of it on a monster though. Does anybody have a picture with one fitted that they wouldn't mind posting up? Thanks.

I've got one on my 695 and it works and fits great. I mounted it the opposite of the above pic. In other words, I put the narrow end in front and the tall end in back. Just be sure to mount it so it doesn't cover your taillight.

I bought my beau the Chicane Summit tail bag, and it looks great on his monster. The price was reasonable and you can carry a small pizza or a TDI alternator if necessary  ;D

I also ran across the ZTechnik Storage Pod that I am considering picking up for myself.

I really like the looks of that chicane bag.  Where did you purchase that from?

I have been thinking of getting a tail bag from these guys:

Great reviews, looks nice and solid.  Also comes with a 30day return policy.

I called BCM Motosports in NH and they brought it in for me as they used to be a distributor, but in looking around online for you I found this post on TOB from Miles:

"Now days with plastic tanks I've gone to running a tail bag. I kinda like not having to work around the tank bag. Most of the time I forget the tailbag is there. I have a Chicane Summit bag that looks like it was designed for the Monster. unfortunately I think they may be out of business. My shop (BCM Motorsports) is a distributer and we haven't been able to get a hold of them for 4 or 5 months now..."

Crap. I did not know this  :-\

my lady has this sucker for long weekends: http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/tail_bags/joe_rocket/motorcycle_space_pack.html

it's relatively cheap, pretty waterproof (about 15 minutes of HARD rain), and looks decent...

I decided to get the road gear euro-sport jumbo hauler.  I will be using to go to Indy in Sept, but will try it out before then and post up a review.  [thumbsup]

I have run with a Nelson-Rigg mini sport (classic) tail bag for about two years. It comes with a rain cover that keeps everything dry so far. It is a smallish bag, holds a sandwich, thing of yogurt (lunch) hand full of misc. stuff, small folding pruning saw, clippers and a rain suit if I roll it real tight and put a strap around it so it won't expand. Sits about nine inches tall and fits the stock seat real nice. (fold the flaps under the bag). Sometimes I think looks to tall but it's real handy. I hardly ever take it off. Sorry no pics. The pictures on the nelson-rigg sit has it on a 600rr. Check it out, it's served me well

Ok, so I got my cortech sport tail bag and have been running with it for a few days. First off, it was really easy to install, just bungied it to the bike and it seems very solid. I've had it up to 90 mph and so far it has stayed put.

I like the way it looks, it is not too big for the bike, but provides enough storage for my needs. The other night to work I was able to put my 15.4 inch dell laptop, sweatshirt, keys, wallet, checkbook, hat, raincover, and a t-shirt inside, and still had some room ( this was with the sides expanded)  Which brings me to the expandable feature. very nice to have. It's simple to unzip and gives you about 3 more inches of space on both sides of the pack.

Overall, I'm very happy with the bag and I would recommend it to anyone thinking about it.  Only con is that I wish It held it's shape a little better when empty.  Not a big deal though.

Here are some pics

I've been researching for what to buy myself for an upcoming trip.  Narrowing it down to the Nelson-Rigg or the Cortech.  Looks nice on your Dark... hmmm...  I'll post up what I buy... :)

Found a new DP tailbag/trunk on ebay last week.
It came in today.
Looks like just what I need, and doesn't take up the biposto, so the wife won't pregnant dog.
I'll post pics when I install.

Received the Cortech in the mail today.  So far it looks like a nice piece of luggage.  Bit concerned about how much it will hold (smaller than anticipated).  I have a 4 day trip hopefully coming up next weekend and I'm afraid I'll have to strap on an extra bag (a backpack or my Chrome messenger bag).  We'll see, have the week to test out the bag.  Will take pics once it's installed and post up here...

Too big for everyday use, but it'll come in handy for trips, and grocery day.
Not bad for $80.
