some kind of two by four, off the back of some gardening truck, smacked me in the head at speed on 183. I'm told I stayed on the bike, pulled over rapidly, and when some folks stopped, I was trying to get off the bike with the engine running and no side stand down. the people who stopped got the bike on the stand and shut down, and had what was apparently a not-so-coherent chat with me, in which they decided to take me to a nearby primacare. I don't really remember anything prior to the ride in their car to primacare. i remember riding to work and being in a hurry because I was late.
Anyway, I got checked out ok, and while still on an adrenaline rush, went and got my bike and drove to motoliberty to buy a new helmet, at which time I briefly debated going back to work, but then decided to go lay down at home and see if the ringing in my ears would stop. this proved to be a good idea. I laid down for about 6 hours, so clearly rest was what was required ( and, in fact, what the doctor had actually ordered ). Next time, I will try and remember to leave the bike/helmet until later [thumbsup]
today, I'm feeling fine. the buzzing / ringing in my ears is gone, and i'm just a bit sore starting at my neck and going down to my lower back, but nothing unexpected. the new helmet looks cool.
quote from william: "damn, that blows. good thing it was your head and not the bike. you can always replace the head, but you can't replace the shit-hot black triple nine"
couldn't agree more....
Glad you are okay...Wow!!!
Ya man, glad that didnt turn out any worse... where are the pics of the new helmet?? [thumbsup]
dude...glad to hear your bike is fine. glad your head made it, too...
Holy s#@t! Glad you didn't get knocked out and/or lay the bike down at speed in traffic. Seriously, I've had some experience with that nonsense. You are extremely lucky my friend. Very sporting of people to stop and make sure you were OK and take care of you. Who would think that people in this God forsaken town would have the heart to do such a thing. Bless them whoever they are. Your helmet did it's job, may it rest in peace. Maybe we should start an "elephant graveyard" for helmets. We could start with yours, mine, Rich's, Andre's... the list is already too long.
You sure there wasn't a turkey dressed like a yardman in the back of that truck. Any witnesses that could confirm that? [laugh]
Damn glad it's all just a bad IZ_ memory and some soreness. Very lucky indeed. [thumbsup] Really pitiful way to BS the wife into getting a new helmet though. Who wears the pants at your house anyway? [laugh]
:o - P - WOW - so glad you are OK & so glad you had on a quality helmet! Sounds like you got by only by the skin of your karmic teeth on this incident. I guess no one got the tag on the landscape truck ? - if they did I would say lawsuit time.
Give your family some extra hugs & kisses today !!!! I know your machine is special to you but I will say what everyone else is probably thinking - the bike is insured and replaceable - you may be insured but are absolutely irreplaceable ! It is a good thing you are in good shape & tough as a boot !
I'm tempted to give up meat ! Send you helmet manufacturer your story - maybe they will replace it for an endorsement - JEEZ what a story !!
I'd love to buy you a drink sometime soon - let me know ! [beer]
Damn, Patrick, good job on finally taking our advice and using your head for once. [thumbsup]
Seriously, that's one f*****g close call. Glad that you're OK and that you were suited up for the ride. I know that it's been said many times, many ways: there is no time that going without gear is OK.

Man, that invokes visions of gear-less squids taking a 2x4 to the dome at speed... That would leave a mark... on the pavement!

new helmet is an icon domain2. it features the "tough luck" on the front, with a lucky 13 on the side... seemed apropos...
Dude, GLAD you're (mostly) OK!
I'm always wary of trucks, pickups and landscaper trailers...
Wow.
Do you need anything?
If you start having cravings for bacon go back to the doctor!

Nice Icon helmet, but my HJC Carbon Fiber helmet That I am selling would have been better! Heck, for that story, I might have sold it even cheaper than the $180 I just dopped the price to. Oh,yeah, Glad you're ok and all that crap and I'll excuse you from making the poor decision of buying new when I have a perfectly good used HJC Carbon Fiber helmet for sale since you had a head boo-boo and were not in a clear state of mind.
No really. I'm glad you made it ok. Nice of the folks to stop and help. Too bad nobody got the tag. Did you make a police report anyway?
I would surely contact the manufacturer and give them your story. Couldn't hurt.
Did I mention I have a HJC Carbon Fiber helmet for sale? Shameless.
Steve
Damn it Patrick, after reading all that I'm really thankful my sticker set is O.K.
Get well soon :-*
L.
P.S. Isn't it cool that everyone in this group wears a helmet?
That whole idea about telling your story to the manufacturer was suggested to me many times after my helmet/turkey interface last year. I blew it off, I had other things to deal with that were slightly more important. But looking back on it I wish I had, the mercenary/profiteer side of me now makes me think that I missed a good opportunity to maybe score a free replacement lid. It would have been worth the chance. I would trade a sheet of paper with my story on it for a new Arai Corsair anytime! [thumbsup] It's like I wasted my 15 minutes of fame. [laugh]

well, you mean except if you're just going down the street...right?
So much for trying to get a group buy on lids at ML
Seriously though, I'm glad to hear your ok

Yeah, it would be hard giving you hard time if you were mentally incapacitated...
...oh, wait a minute... ... ;D
Scary stuff Patrick. I'm really glad to hear that you're okay!
Next time, leave the "breaking boards with the skull" to the real Karate professionals.

Patrick, bummer commute story. Glad the sticker set is ok - not sure if my tender ears could stand to hear some of those utterances again from Cher if she had to do it over.
Glad you are ok. The new helmet is perfect!
Ouch man that's gotta suck! Good to hesar that you're ok! Figures that you'd get messed up the days that we're in dallas :P
Glad your noggin is okay. Pretty fookin scary.
Holy Cr*p! It sounds like you were technically knocked out, but still had some presence of mind to pull over rather than fall over. That is a very scary situation. I'm glad you weren't hurt and nice people were there to help you out. Did the guys with the landscaping truck even know that they almost killed someone? ???
One of the many things I like about this group is that we appear to wear helmets at all times. I'm proud to be associated with all of you.
Svoloch - I am SO happy to hear that a) you're all right, b) your gear worked as designed, and c) people were so quick to respond with kindness and concern for your well-being.
I was thinking as I read your narrative, "Man, what would that be like without a helmet?" and "How can people still ride without helmets???" Cheeses.
One thing I thank my ex-wife for is her terror at driving behind the landscaping trucks and trailers - she always made me slow down to create distance or change lanes or pass them. I thought she was nuts (well...), but I see now it was the right thing.
Thanks for sharing your experience - it makes us all better riders.
Pura vida!
George
soooooo.........do you eat meat now? Didn't know if it knocked some since into ya [cheeky]
But, glad you're alright either way [thumbsup]

I remember distinctly when I was riding bulls, I got hit in the head somehow (either by bull's head, horns or hooves or hitting the dirt), then I "woke up" putting my gear away at the fence. Nothing inbetween. No medics, nothing. I had my rope hanging on the fence and I was taking off my shoes when I realized where I was. The brain is a funny thing huh?
Steve
D@mn, I can't believe it. Just makes me mad as hell... i've been wanting to hit Svoloch with a 2x4 for some time now, & I just can't believe someone beat me to it :P
And an accidental landscape truck at that, not even a pro?!? Jeeshh...
good to see you earlier, man...glad to hear and see you're doing well. hope you didn't spend all of the kids b-day money at the dub earlier. though i was a little bummed i didn't get to meet your smoking hot wife. had the phone on silent earlier btw...sorry; didn't see it 'till just a bit ago. hope you were just calling to get me to have a beer, and not because you needed help after getting hit with another length of lumber.
crap, that's some freak happenstance... :-\ glad to hear you're ok
1st let me say that I am very happy you are okay! [thumbsup] And this group is the best about riding with all their gear! [beer]
2nd if you would have been a meat eater, then you would have had the mobility to MOVE YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE WAY, not just sit there and take whatever is thrown at you. ;D
And 3rd, I have to agree with L'Smart Ass and say "DAMN" wish it could have been me or scott at the least to bash you in the head with a 2x4. [laugh]
Patrick, I am really glad you were not hurt! The new lid looks great also!!

Gee, doesn't someones "significant other" run a landscape company.... and he was conveniently out of town.... sounds like a "Dateline " episode in the making.
did the truck look like this??

He didn't get hit by groovy vibes. It was pine.
Glad to hear you are okay!! Picked up my second nail of the summer on 183 yesterday - it is the most "no holds barred-no rules apply-3rd world highway" I have ever travelled.
So, a few weeks back, I was sitting at a stoplight on the 75 south service road....I could feel the heat and vibration (and rattling) closing in on me like a fighter jet. This friendly fella - who I only could assume was the ICE Man, reaches over and says, "Hi I'm Patrick, nice bike." It was too early in the morning to conclude this was a flirtatious gesture....and I realized there was only ONE copy of the Black XEROX (how's that for irony?)
...so I smacked said gentleman on the helmet and replied, "It's IZ_, you goofball" and continued my commute along the highway thru hell to the mid-cities...

all I saw was a IZ_ chipmonk on a 1098... hard to recognize you with your cheeks pushed up against your nose in the helmet... however, I'm always grateful for a smack in the head to get me on the right track ;)
going to finally start my thread I've been meaning to start... the "things I have almost run into on 183..." thread... sadly the knock to the head won't count since the thread is for things I ALMOST hit...

Jonathan Davies rocks. He stopped to help a fellow board member who crashed his bike a couple of days ago...
