Title: Gold Brake upgrade Kit for S2R 800
Post by: CairnsDuc on August 02, 2008, 03:33:42 PM
G'day all

I was chatting with my Ducati dealer the other day, and he mentioned he had a Gold brake upgrade Kit for the S2R 800 PN: 96845805b
http://www.ducati.com:80/shop/product.jsp?catid=cat970133&prodid=prod800122

He ordered in for a customer about 6 months ago and the guy crashed his bike and never came back (Got my Termi kit the same way)
He's offered it to me at a pretty good price, Since I'm the only cust left with an S2R 800.

I'm wondering if you need any other parts to complete the kit?
The only reason I ask is the Ducati Website states "Completed with oversize brake master cylinder"
Has anyone here fitted the Kit?

I'm looking at putting a deposit on the kit, but just wondering if I should order any thing else to ensure an easy upgrade when the time comes.

Thanks  [thumbsup]

Don't know if you can make it work with the stock coffin master, but to be sure, you can upgrade to a pee-cup style master for pretty cheap. PM member "Motored-Sports", he should have one lying around.

I think it's meant to be read as 'complete with oversized master'. This kit comes with an oversized coffin master.

Nice, so it already comes with an oversized coffin master...could you tell me if the master looks like the stock masters?

IIRC, brembo has coffins w/different piston bores, so it makes sense that it would have the appropriate master.

The masters for single and dual disc bikes are different bore sizes...not sure of the number.

IIRC the master on the S2R with the smaller rotors was a different size also.

13mm for single, 16 for dual.

Well my dealer got back to me, yes it includes the new Master Cylinder, everything is in there good to go, the only thing he said they don't use is the OEM brake pads, they put a better Pad in (EBC or Ferodo) and keep the OEM, he said a lot of people come in and only want OEM brake pads, so they keep them for those customers who only want genuine parts.

Sidenote: He said that a surprising number of owners come in and if the parts he sells do not have the factory part number on them, they will not buy it. Genuine parts only!

Im not sure but i think the masters that it will come with "MIGHT" be the same size masters you have.  Im also somewhat sure that the MC will be coffin style.  I upgraded my s2r pads to goldlines but I did not buy it as a package.  I bought rotors and calipers used off another member on the old forum.  He had a smaller MC connected to his calipers, hence me saying that the MC that the UPGRADE PACKAGE comes with may be the same size.

I'm curious as to what kind of a deal your dealer is giving you.

The reason is that you can get a set of the 4 pad calipers and a radial master from a 999 on ebay pretty cheap these days and the difference is night and day between the goldlines and the 999 setup.

I looked at Ebay and a number of options (spoke to Cycleworks and looked at MotoWheels)
So when I asked for a price from my dealer I expected it to be well over a thousand $$$ (I only mentioned that I was looking at upgrading the brakes, it was then he advised he had it in stock)

He's going to supply and fit for me for well under a thousand!
I looked at this Kit and the best I could find it for overseas was about $650 (Aussie) + Shipping ($100 roughly) and then fitting (I'd rather get this fitted by a professional, Brakes are one thing I don't mess around with, I'll change pads and bleed them, but anything I else I'd rather let a specialist do it)

So for near on the same amount of money, I'll get them supplied, fitted and setup, better brake pads, and maintain my Factory warranty.

And a side note: The guys cracked open the Kit yesterday and confirmed it is a coffin style Master cylinder and yes it is slightly larger to suit the 4 piston kit.
I think when they start to die/leak/weep at a later time, I'll upgrade them then to the Cup style Masters.
The Coffins will do for now.

Thanks for all the advice and Info Guys  [thumbsup]

The 999 setup requires wheels, and forks to be swapped as well as calipers. I found out the hard way when I decided to use 999 wheels on my Monster. I'll need to get the 999 forks to go with the wheels due to the rotor offset of 15mm. Either that or sell off the wheels.

EDIT: My bad, you were talking about the calipers only, not the whole deelio.

I looked into this option a couple years ago.  At that time, I could have gotten it shipped for $550.  How long do you have on your warranty?

It took some time but if you look at the "parts for sale" you will find deals for half of what your dealer is asking.  It is up to you.  I just took the other route and bought stuff used.

Someone is selling goldline rotors and calipers with lines for 360 shipped.  You will not have a MC but you can fine a cup master for sale on the board for about $120 ish give or take about $20.  That is $600 for rotor, calipers and upgraded MCs for both clutch and brakes.

Frightening part is, I'm only paying a about $150 more and all the parts are new, supplied and fitted.
With Factory warranty on the parts and I maintain my warranty on the bike (15 months left)

Also most shipping will not cover to Australia, so by the time I take shipping charges into account, the bill gets much higher. (The joys of being on the other side of the planet to most of the major suppliers)

But thanks for looking around OwnyTony, I always try to keep an open mind to Ideas, but in this case my dealer is just trying to clear an Item he has no other way of selling. they have always looked after me so I can't complain.

I placed a deposit down late yesterday.  [thumbsup]

OOO, did not know you was in Australia.  Different story there.   Lots of parts available here where shipping is not a big an issue.  I paid $277 for front brakes and rotors and another $100 for both MCs (no levers, but i was going to upgrade to after market anyways).

Termi's and Ohlins rear shock go on towards the end of this month, brakes in the next few months.
