Title: Bubbles in paint job, any way to get them out?
Post by: SaltLick on August 02, 2008, 05:33:02 PM
crazy question, just checking.

My bike has an aftermarket paint job on it. When i got it, there are two quarter sized bubbles in the paint. Is there any way to get these out?

the paint job was already like that when i got the bike a year ago. i talked him down cause of it a few hundred bucks, of course that was spent many moons ago.  What if you poke a hole in the bubble with a pin? What if you slit it with a razorblade can you glue it down somehow?

Save yourself some grief and just plan on getting it repainted this winter. You could experment with it, but nothing is going to make them go away.

What year/model Monster do you have?

The reason I ask is because there were a number of S2R's that had defective plastic tanks.  Mine being one of them.   They would "blister" and would look as if they had bubbles in the paint.   However, it's not the paint, it's the actual plastic comprising the tank.  Ducati was replacing them under warranty. (However, mine didn't start to blister until my warranty had expired and I was out of luck with Ducati NA.)  Makes you wonder if this is what precipated the whole replaceable "skins" approach on the 696 tanks.

Anyway, I thought I would bring that up in case you have an S2R.

Don't take it so hard [drink]  Look at bright side. You could start thinking about how you want it. Then send it to DP.

Is there any way to get [bubbles] out?

Rabbits and hawks should do it.

Another +1 for DP.

He painted my tank a couple years ago.  It was a matte finish and it was fantastic.  Also hand painted the Duc logo on, which came out better than I had hoped.  So be creative and make him work for a paycheck.

"Sometimes" you can stick a bubble with a pin & lay the paint back down with your finger. "Sometimes"

Paint is stiff. I think if you do anything to it at all it will crack and start chipping off. Maybe you could consider sticking it with a pin like norm described, but having a bit of touch-up paint ready just in case you need to put a tiny bit on? It will probably look pretty mediocre either way. The only way this would be an improvement would be if the fixed spot were very very small.
