Title: Buying a 2000 M750...
Post by: xxsoultonesxx on August 03, 2008, 11:56:42 PM
A couple questions from a complete newbie buying my first bike....First the bike has been sitting for over 6 months. There has been no fuel in it, and one of the spark plugs has been removed. How can I tell if anything got in with the cylinder? Also, did this bike come stock with a single front disc? I was under the impression 750's had a dual disc front brake. Bike has about 17k on the clock, and he's asking $4k Other than this the bike looks clean. Anything else I should be looking for?

Hmm, might be a bit high.  I paid less for my '99 M750 in 2003.  It had been down, but the damage was repaired and the mileage wasn't as high.  Mine was stock with a single disc and has no problem stopping, even 2-up.  It's coming up on it's 18,000 mile service too, so take that into account.  I would offer about 3K and see what happens.

I'd be more concerned about the condition than the price.  Not run for 6 months?  One spark plug removed?

Before buying that bike I would want to make sure of the following:
The battery was maintained and is in working condition.
Compression is good on both cylinders.
  The bike runs.
If these criteria are not met, do not walk, run!

In addition, are there service records?  How old are the belts?  How old are the tires?  When was the last service?

Everything else looks great...The guy selling it is my old boss, and he never had time to ride it. The tires have less than 900 miles on them, and he has every service record since new. In his mechanically inept attempt to "winterize" he drained the fuel and I'm guessing he must have fouled the plugs because the one was removed and never replaced. Since then it has sat in his garage for over two months without any attempt to start it. The deal is he pays for any necessary  maintenance to get it running and once I can ride it and see how it runs, then I make an offer. Everything sound legit?

It sound legit, but. . . . The price IS high.
Also, it's yer boss, man. What do you do if it runs long enough to sell, then breaks a belt?

IMO, I'd pass.
