Title: Advice needed for boring out a Monster Triple for a sbk fork conversion
Post by: Ducatiloo on August 04, 2008, 01:14:56 PM
I just got off the phone with the company that said they were going to do this for me.  It seems that don't do "little" projects anymore!.
They were the only company around that was willing to do this for a cheap price.
Is there any tool or drill bit that can bore out 3 mm of metal out of a triple?

I dont think youd want to buy a 53mm bit. It would probably cost more than buying a new triple or sending it out. My best bet would be to find a machine shop, and just start making calls. Mail it out to a shop. Hell theres a few guys here who work in machine shops that could probably do it for you.

check out oncycles.com, they prolly still have some triples left over for rediculous prices, like 100$ or sumthin.

Nope on the oncycles. I tried that. They were blowing out the last of the cyclecat stuff, but it's gone from what I can tell. Get a SpeedyMoto for like $300 or so and it's pretty snazzy.  [thumbsup]

+1
I had a buddy do this for me at his work.  Came out perfectly!!!!!
Not to mention the fact that unless you have a drill press, there isn't a way to ensure that you are drilling straight.

You can use a simple boring bit which is not very expensive. It's also pretty easy to do, I would think that most machine shops would do it for $60-$80.

As a matter of fact, I have a DP item that came with the Ohlins kit, it is 53mm.
The problem is I'm on the other side of the pond.

Thanks for the offers and advice.  oncycles only has pre 2001 stuff left.  I'm looking to keep my stock bars if possible.  I like the Rizoma setup but don't see a 53 mm kit plus I think the forks will be too long.

The SpeedyMoto is about $400 if I want to keep my stock bars hmmm they do look sweet.  I found a place that claims to have cyclecat in stock still but they wanted $700 for the triple and the fancy clip-ons :o  But so sexy...

I want the clip ons for my monster, so I'm going with the SpeedyMoto when I get the chance. I also have a set of 10-spoke March's off a 749, so I'll be swapping out forks as well when that happens. I have a set of Showas I need to get on my SS, but nobody seems to make a conversion triple for that machine. Might be hitting Some Dude up for a bore out on this one. One thing that might make this more interesting, the '07 CBR1000RR forks have a 50mm top triple, a 53mm bottom end, and look like a perfect fit for a monster. They also have radial brakes, are fully adjustable, and I've seen them for very reasonable prices on fleabay.

I was thinking about maybe trying a set of newer R6 forks.  From what i've read they are 4 way adjustable kayaba's (don't know wether that's good or not) .  They have radial brakes and they kind of look sexy too.  I think these forks with a set of 5 spoke R6 wheels would look great on a monster,  Or maybe I just need an R6 Hell I don't know.  Can anybody comment on the R6 Forks are they comparable to the showa SBK forks?

All of the big 4 Supersport bike forks should work, so as long as they are 50mm top and (53?mm bottom, check that)
as far as function. Depends on your application. SBK forks are generally really nice pieces, so are the jap bikes, but either way, unless your spot on their weight, youd still need to get springs. As far as their valves go, ill let other people comment on them since i dont know. I want to do a fork conversion, soley for radial brakes and color. I have 3 way Showas on my S2R1k with $400 invested into them. So unless i can sell them for $600 bucks to someone that has my exact same weight, im bust.

Im hunting on ebay for R6 and GSXR 2005+ forks

Send Qfactor a pm. He works in a machine shop.

I saw his work last year when he made the spacers etc. for Jewcati's GSXR fork install. He did a really nice job.

Also, if you find someone local to do the job, keep in mind you are NOT removing 3mm worth of material. It's really only 1.5mm from around the circumference which will add up to 3mm total in diameter.

When boring the triple, as the area is split, some chattering could occur. It would be better to make up a shim/spacer to fit in the slot then clamp it with the bolts. This will make the workpiece more rigid and ensure that the hole is bored accuratly.
