For those that have taken the front fairing off, is the wind blast significantly greater?
not much on a 696.
may put it on for long highway travel, but it's not much.
..good question...
im 6'3" and the damn thing would just point all the air right on my visor :)
so, i took it off...
i guess that if you feel that the fairing is actually helping the air flow get over your head, you might want to keep it...if not trash it...
the air pushing on you is nto that bad...youll get used to it :)
I'm 5'6", and w/o the screen, once I hit about 75mph, the wind blast tries to lift my helmet if I'm not crouched down
I found with it on, the wind is directed straight into my helmet.
I took it off with the stock bars still on and I didn't like the look. I changed the bars to the Suburbans and then took the fairing off and it looks alot better IMO. And I think the wind blast has been taken away from my helmet and directed at my torso.
BTW, I'm around 5'10. ;)

When I first started riding on my 620dark [no fairing] I felt the wind blast was rather extreme at higher speeds. At around 70+ the wind blast felt like it was trying to move my torso off of the bike & made me tuck down to help stabilize. It felt to me at the time (as a new rider) that the wind could potentially pull my [fat] arse off the bike!
I ended up putting a fairing on the bike, and the calm air pocket it created right in the chest area was a welcome and (to me) necessary improvement in comfort and control. I've since put down over 30,000 miles on motorcycles, so my opinion might be different if I tried again today. I personally prefer the look of the mini-fairing on the monsters, but I think I'm in the minority on that one!
I know many DMF'ers have taken them off, never to replace them & prefer it. I suppose you just gotta try it & see what you think!
It helps me a lot at highway speeds but I'm only 5'2" and it really deflects the wind over my head. I've taken it off recently cause I haven't been riding the highway and I've noticed a big difference if I have to get up to 60 or so.
I took it off after the first time I took it on the highway. It wasn't a case of wind resistance even, but rather the racket and distraction it caused. The thing was wobbling around so bad I thought it was just going to rip off and hit me in the face, not to mention the vibrations I was getting through the bars.
I do think the Monsters look better without the "fairing" as well. It looks kind of like an afterthough, as though the designers just kinda chucked it on there at the last minute.
About the ONLY reason I can find to run with a windshield is the bug issues here in the midwest, but it's not worth the rest of the cons.
For me at 6'4", the turbulence noise is gone when I stand up above the screen. So, for slower riding I'd say loose it.
At high speed the screen wobbles a lot - I put on the Zero Gravity Touring Screen, it's dead stable and makes high speed rides safer.
The ZG will lift the air stream 2-4 inches (I can see the bugs are redirected straight towards my face instead of towards my throat).
I wish for a screen that will fold/lift according to speed. Is that too much to ask for?

Check out some of the new BMW's. The windscreen height is electrically adjustable. Slick.
With stock bars, you cant really tuck into the quiet zone the fairing provides, unless your small (im 5'6 and its very uncomfortable to do that.) with clip ons, its great. you get into an almost no wind zone. super quiet. and your head isnt fighting side to side. It works great for anything over 75mph. In the summer time, id take it off. because you get more wind to your chest without it.
Eitherway, it works if you can get into its stream, and if you can, it only works at superslab speeds.

It's been three good years now with the DP CF fairing........... I'll let you know once I took it off ;D
i took mine off right after i got the bike, and i like it better. with the fairing on, the wind would hit me right at the bottom of the helmet. i could duck down a couple inches or sit up extra straight and it would be fine, but the most comfy position to sit just shook my head like crazy. when i lowered the gauges and headlight i kept the brackets for the fairing on the "U" so i can try it and see if i like it now with the clipons.
btw im 5'11" to 6' depending on how good my posture is at that moment.

from 0 to 80, you won't notice much difference. Above 80mph, it's much nicer with the fairing on.
Yes it does help
But it looks like A$$ IMHO. I put on a Buell CF screen and like the look better and still get some of the higher speed beni's
Yeah, take it off...or don´t buy it at all in the first place.
The bike looks a lot better without the fly screen imho.
But if you go for the belly cover, seat cover and stuff, you should have it on.
Wind wise its a joke...a good one [laugh]

Why 1004?
I have the fairing and I have never taken it off. I really like the look of it on my s2r. What I have done to it that has made a noticeable and appreciated difference is put some fairing stays on it. The Poor Duc fairing stays make the stock wind screen rock solid. It does not wobble around at all and has really smoothed out the wind stream coming at my face.
I've never had a windshield, but the force of the wind once you pass 80mph is enough to require me to close the shoulder vents on my Tourmaster gear because they start acting like a parachute. Not sure the windshield would help with that though ~
JM
i noticed a significant increase in wind to my face when i took the windscreen off. I tuck in pretty tight on the highway, so i manage to get most of it over me... but i am positive that if i put the screen back on, it would be even better.
it just looks like shit IMO, and does wobble like hell.
There is someone out there that make extra supports for them though. You can get them at monsterparts.com i believe.
Not much difference,i experimented on and off and i didn't feel any difference. The wind still blast by your helmet i think the same way,it will still sway your head from side to side. That's at around 180-200 kph. That's just MHO.
Ditched it after a week. Above 60 you're going to get blasted anyway. Plus it's a naked bike, it should stay naked. ;D
I tried both on and off on the track date and it didn’t really make much difference on the high speed (both are bad ;D ). Once I got used to the wind blasting, it doesn’t really bother me anymore.
But the ugly wind screen really bothers my eye so it’s gone..
Good helmet + the windscreen will help you out a lot up over 60mph.
The screen got the wind off my chest (I'm 6'-2) and going from a low-end Shoei to the X-11 made wind impact on my helmet, with or without the screen, almost nil. Then if you tuck in at highway speeds, as others have noted, you can really take advantage of the bubble. I've never had a helmet "lifting" issue, but that could again be a result of the difference in helmet designs/aerodynamics.
I guess this is somewhat of a plug for poor duc but, (as i stated before) with fairing stays, there is a noticeable and appreciated difference. When you have the front wind screen on WITH OUT any support, it flaps around in the wind and you're hit with blasts of wind in all different directions because the fairing is flapping. When it is supported, it s a constant stream. It still is aimed at your head but your helmet is (should be) aerodynamic. With a constant stream of wind and you helmet further "blending" into that wind stream, there is a noticeable difference.
My ride is a lot less choppy due to the wind hitting me in one place. With out fairing stays, i would assume the windscreen is just as good as it not being there.

RX-7 corsair... screen on would keep the wind at my face/top of head when sitting sorta upright, and the aero could do it's job. switching to the corsair from my astral made it pretty obvious.
screen off would keep the wind at my jaw/neck area in the same posture, and my lid starts to lift. getting down closer to the tank, and it feels better.
crouching on the tank, screen on makes the ton alot more managable :D
YMMV

Well, you can see 1098 from where you're sitting...
I put one on and hated it. It seemed to redirect all the wind directly to my shoulders and my head. With it off, my shoulders and head still get blasted, but it feels more even over my whole torso. I never tucked in behind it because the noise was unbelievable loud. Though the lack of pressure was nice...
But I think it came down to looks. I hate the looks with it on.
