Title: Exhaust leak
Post by: numbskull on August 05, 2008, 02:36:11 PM
After a ride yesterday I noticed a couple of sooty, 1/8 of an inch marks at the seams between the s-pipes and mid-pipe/headers of my Termis on my S2R1K. It looks to me like its a couple of exhaust leaks. The bike runs fine, it just burbles and pops on decel, which it's done for a long time. Is this a problem that should be looked at, or will it become a problem? Is there a sealant that I can use to fix this? Thanks in advance, everyone.

I thought it was supposed to "burble and pop" on deceleration!  ??? ;)

Yeah, that's why I'm wondering if evidence of a leak at an exhaust seam is a big deal or not. It's definitely not back-firing and I wouldn't have bothered even asking if I hadn't seen those two black, sooty marks on the pipes.

I too have a small leak in my termis in almost the same spot.  I noticed mine accidentally by feeling some air on the back of my hand while I was fiddling around.  I am considering some high temp copper sealant or just leaving it alone.

you can get some hi heat exhaust goop at your local auto parts store purty cheap.  basically a liquid gasket.

That popping is probably due to that leak, fyi.  I had a small leak on my former monster.  It had some high mounts and there was a leak where the headers and s-pipes met.  In my case the s-pipe could be tightened at that joint.  I did so and the popping went away.

A true back fire is a totally different issue.  it's when you get some sort of combustion out the intake system, not just popping or after burn in the exhaust system.

I just tightened them tonight, so I'll see if it makes a difference on tomorrow's ride. If not I'll try using a sealant as a couple of you suggested. Thanks for the help, everyone.  :)

Well, that didn't work. I'm on a search for some sealant now.  >:(
