Title: Ethanol in Gas
Post by: Duc L'Smart on August 06, 2008, 11:25:53 AM
Interesting thread...

Anyone know gas stations in Dallas NOT selling E10?

The summer formulation gasoline in the Metroplex is required by the EPA to contain ethanol because it burns much more cleanly than 100% formulation. It is a method of reducing the pollution within the d/fw area. It also boosts the octane rating a bit.

During the non-summer months you can occasionaly find an independent station or two which have it, but during the summer, it is illegal in Dallas and Tarrant counties.

I hear there are some stations east of Dallas in Forney, Terrell, etc. which will have it this time of year since they are outside of Dallas county.

I have no problems with the ethanol gas...

My problem is current 93 octane gas is no longer as good as the old 93 octane (E10 or even NOT E10 gas)
and I'm going to have to do something about it on my SS
With 11.1 compression it pings on premium no matter where I get it from.
Just a half-gallon of 109 octane race gas per tank and it straightens right out like it used to be...

I have put colder plugs in,
retarded ignition timing,
richened up the fuel mixture...
Still pings due to too high compression.  :(

I have figured with a .3mm and a .4mm base gasket stacked (.7mm total) I will have 10.33:1 compresion...
Of course it'll effect cam timing, so I'll have to re-degree them too...
Sucks, but... that's what I'm going to have to do.
Bummer.

Is it too much hassle to carry a container of octane booster?  My buddy drives his hotted up 60-70's muscle cars around and uses the booster chemicals.  A bit easier than engine work, exscpecially if you're busy with 50 other projects.

Desmo Times sells some really cool "one shot" plastic containers of octane booster.  They are the size of a mini-snickers bar.  Easy to stick under the seat.

Cheers.

The hassle and expense of octane booster is no fun for a daily driver.
I'm just taking it easy on it so I don't hole a piston.

To pull the engine, cylinders, put it back together and time the cams is only a one day thing...
It sounds like a lot but can be done in under a 12-pack.   [drink]

At 10.3 compression it should be ping-free.

Hell, it needs valve guides and valvestem seals too... maybe I'll do it one weekend off...
Okay, that would make it two 12-packs   ;D

That's true about the daily driver pain.  Greg (I forgot y'all know him now) just drives each one of the collection occasionally, so not as big of a deal to add the juice.

Let me know when you tear the engine down, I'm dying to see desmo guts.  Sounds like 4 12-packs.   [beer]
