OK, two things i recommend for all 696 owners based on what i've done so far. [coffee]
14T sprocket. [thumbsup] Do it. 6th gear becomes a great highway gear. around town, pick a gear and you'll be happy.
Coil Recall. Get it checked. [thumbsup] no more overheating from the 4000rpm stutter. seems to get better throttle response although could be a combo with the 14T
Hope owners chime in and provide more "to do's" [clap]

you know in reality, when the new Monster comes out with the 1000 you old monster guys will be all over it... ride it and see!
hopefully they will temp us with the 1100 engine, and more trellis frame

are there any instructions posted yet on how to remove the canister? i want to do it this weekend as well, but im not sure how to do it or where the hoses go after you unhook everything....
as for the stickers:
when you remove them do you save yours, move them somewhere else on the bike, or just toss them? i noticed they have the vin number and production date on there i believe.

The VIN # is stamped onto the frame so that's not to important but if you can get it off in 1 piece it's probably a good idea to save it.

yes there are some other threads that talk about the canister. and even some pics without the shroud. you'll have to remount another part as well. honestly, though i like the look with the shroud, but i will be looking for the Euro one without the canister when i get to germany.
it's pretty simple to remove, there's just a few bolts holding it on. when you do, you have to relocate the rectifier and the horn. all i did was take the bracket that mounts the horn and reverse it 180 degrees, then mount the both the rectifier and horn to the same spot.... i know that makes no sense.... here:

you can see the horn and rectifier attached just below the X| in the frame.
as far as the hoses go, you have 2 options:
get some m6 bolts, remove the nipples and replace
or
hook the large vent tube that comes from the top of the gas tank to the T connector.... you'll see what i mean when you get it apart.
as for the stickers, mine are in a "time capsule." someone was making one and wanted something from me while i was pealing them off.
and to be a pedantic ass, the N in VIN stands for number.

thanks so much for the pics. im going to try and tackle it this weekend. i like the look of the shroud itself, but not with the canister attatched. im going to take it all apart and get an in person view of the setup with and without the shroud. is there a place where we can buy a euro spec shroud that doesnt have the space for the canister? that would be pretty trick. thanks so much everyone this place has been so helpful thus far with my new found love!

+1 I think I may also try this this weekend.
Only other thing I've done to mine is buy some bar end mirrors. On my short list is a tail chop kit once I can get my hands on one, smaller signals, and some slip-ons when I can afford it. I'm almost always riding around the city, so I may try the 14t sprocket also.
someone's been talking about a eruo shroud, but i didn't pay attention cause i like it with no shroud... search in How-To. at any rate, you can remove the canister, leave the shroud and maybe use a dremmel or something to cut off the bit where the canister is mounted.
i'll probably switch sprockets, but it's not a big priority since i'm used to the existing one. but for $40, why not.
definitely changing mirrors/tail/levers when cash allows.
I just rented a 696 for 4 days. I really liked the bike (I have 1 2007 S4RS for comparison). I thought the gearing was fine but the bike needs to be a little louder. Josh at GP fired one up with the carbon termis on and it was perfect. About 3/4 the way between stock and my bike (which I think is actually too loud)

Not sure if they changed it for the 696, but the nipples on mine are m5 bolts. Easiest (and cheapest) thing to do is just get 2 vacuum caps for the nipples. That way, when you want to sync the throttle bodies, you just take the caps off...

i have some experience in molding lip kits on cars, so does anyone think its doable? i was thinking about just chopping it off just after the blinkers so that they retain their stock mounting points. then just fabricating somesort of new LP holder either at the end of the chopped tail, or tucked up above the rear tire....im afraid of how it will look after its smoothed out and painted black since its already black plastic and painting it may alter the appearance or the look of the finish on the plastic.

On every OTHER monster, people have freely developed DIY solutions for a tail chop, but for the 696 specifically, because the piece is already modular, AND (this is the big part for me) houses the seat lock, which I would like to retain. So I'm thinking about checking out this CF kit after they actually get it into production:

I used vacuum caps on the nipples as well.
Any time a bike has a linkage between multiple throttle butterflies, some sort of syncing will be needed eventually.
Enduro Engineering offers a little "track box" full of various hard to find metric bolts for KTM's that comes in handy for a Ducati. I used to 5mm bolts to plug the holes.

i don't think the seat lock is actually in the plastic bit, but rather mounted to the sub frame. planning to take the whole thing apart this weekend to investigate further, but i think you could lose both plastic pieces and still keep the seat lock.
i've been debating just switching out for a tail light with integrated signals and removing both the plastic bits.

The lock come off with it, I think you're supposed to take it out, and put in into the DP short tail kit. But there was nothing left back there as you can see from my pic.
I do think we could do without both plastic bits, but we'll need to find some way to mount that lock. It does have some movement because its a cable type release.
Here's a pic with the whole rear removed, but the seat placed back on....Looks great...I say tuck the license plate up and back, and integrated blinkers/tail light, we'll be all set...Just need something to do with the lock....Any ideas?

I don't get why you need/want this. The 696 already has 3 teeth up in the back compared to a 695.
