Title: Pre-ride check -- license plate bracket
Post by: ODrides on August 10, 2008, 07:48:19 AM
On a ride from Richmond VA to Raleigh NC last weekend on the 998 my license plate and bracket took a wrong turn somewhere along the way.  I knew the bracket was loose, but I figured it was just bent by the previous owner, so I never inspected it to see if it could be tightened.  Doh!

I've told this story to several friends and I'm amazed at how many said, "Did you see it fly off?"  What kind of bizarre physical vortex would you have to be in to see your own license plate fly off?

Anyway, I discovered it missing once I reached my destination and luckily had no blue-light problems on the ride back.  Ordered up a new bracket from Evoluzione ($50) that arrived in a speedy 3 days from California.  Picked up a new plate ($10) from a chatty lady at the DMV who was very interested in talking about the Ducati in a novel she was reading.

The Evo bracket is desined to hold the turn signals, too, but mine are mounted under the tail, so the Dremel tool was called in to neaten things up.  A quick shot of primer and satin black and I was good to go.

The painfully obvious moral of the story is: check and tighten any loose parts before the ride.
