Title: Quietest helmet?
Post by: mxwinky on August 10, 2008, 09:03:45 PM
What's the consensus on the quietest helmet out there?  Rate your lid, quiet or a riot?

Remember that you usually compromise ventilation for quiet.

Shoei X-eleven = quieter than Scorpion EXO 700. It also gets better ventilation too.  [thumbsup]

+1 on the Shoei X-11  . I have The Shoei X-11 , Shoei RF 1000, Arai RX-7, Arai Quantum 2, and Suomy Vandal and the X-11 wins by a narrow margin over the Arai RX-7 in my opinion.   Dolph

EXO-700 is the loudest helmet ever.

Shoei RF-1000 is very quiet.

Webbikeworld has a review and a list of the most quietest helmet. check it out

Schuberth S1 Pro gets great comments on quietness.

HJC FS-10 is louder than Arai RX7.  In fact, FS-10 is about as loud as an old 1980's Bieffe we have kicking around the garage as a passenger spare!

No helmet is quiet enough to prevent hearing loss.  I suggest pick the helmet you like and using ear plugs.  [thumbsup]

Schuberth, R1 and S1 (Pro), is constant testwinners. I got an R1 and for me, it's not quiet at all. BUT, if I stand up above the screen it's super quiet, if I lift my shoulders it's super quiet, if I wear a tube it's semi-quiet.

What I find is that the noise is created at the helmets rear third - where it is more open because it is a sports helmet.

I have two ideas - loose the screen or build a collar to fill it out more around the neck.

My point is: every helmet works differently on every bike and rider, so consensus is not possible (except for earplugs [thumbsup])

agreed.  i think my jacket seals up the bottom.  thinking of buying a  wind blocker (http://www.webbikeworld.com/r2/windjammer/helmet-wind-blocker.htm)

I tried that one. It does reduce noise nicely, but it fell off after 10 minutes (slides down). Besides the helmet gets kind of difficult to get on and the ventilation loss isn't a good selling point either.

For some it might work, but I have my doubts - at least you would have to find some way of making it stick. Too bad, because the noise reduction is nice.

Sounds like you're getting noise fromt he windscreen. I bet if you slouched down a bit lower it would be quieter.

Nope, tried that - the turbulence plus the open rear third is what causes it  - for me.

+1  I completely agree.  With most of our aftermarket exhausts and those w/ a dry clutches (I'm jealous) a helmet alone will never be quiet enough to prevent hearing loss.

+1  WebBikeWorld doe comprehensive, very thorough reviews and always comment on the noise levels of the helmets they test.  Look at what they have to say.

+1 on this

I have a Shoei X-11 and still wear earplugs or on long drives Etymotic ER-6i's (with volume at minimum)

I love the sound of the exhaust and clutch and you can still hear both to my satisfaction!!

One thing you can and should do is find a comfortable brand of earplugs and wear them.

Not only will they make your Helmet quieter but they wii save your hearing in the long run and help stave off riding fatigue in the short run.  Dolph

My suomy spec1r is incredibly loud. Custom fitted ear plugs can be found for around 50 - 60 a pair. Definitely recommended regardless of what helmet you're using.

hello,

i'd say the schuberth R1 is it.

the R1 is supposedly the quietest helmet on the market and this may be true. i rode a full day each, with and w/o earplugs to give this helmet a fair test on sound levels. i'm a music producer and engineer and as i'm getting older and over 20 yrs in a career that relies on my ears for a living, i've been finding that my threshold for noise when i ride has gotten increasingly more sensitive. i've been in the market for a new helmet and found the R1. it's definitely THE quietest helmet i've owned. anything below 70mph is like 40mph in other helmets i've owned. i still wear my earplugs, and with this combo, it's bliss for me.

the built in tinted visor that's inside the main face shiield is awesome too. venting and anti-fogging is exceptionally good as well.

the fit is fairly accurate if you go with your exact measurement and follow their chart. i bought a scorpion exo-700 a few months previous and their med was too small for me. i ordered a med R1 going with their chart and it fits great. it's slightly tight on my cheeks, but not by much. some helmets are more oval or more narrow or egg shaped, etc. this feels like an upside down egg but mostly round and not very narrow...make sense? well it's very comfy.

AND THIS IS THE LIGHTEST HELMET I'VE EVER WORN...hands down! i've had shoei, hjc, scorpion and arai and the R1 s the lightest.

well i had this helmet for about 6 months before i crashed. i low sided at around 70mph and was tumbling violently, so my head hit the ground a few times but after, my head didn't hurt at all nor did i lose conscience once. i did fracture 5 ribs and sprained my ankle  [roll]

saving up for another one but they're a bit pricey but will definitely get another. i have an arai profile right now but it doesn't feel as high quality as the R1 did.
