Ok im stuck at work right now and there is severe lightning and thunderstorms going on outside. Long story short my car and my bike are in the shop so my only mode of transport is my brothers CBR! My boots are waterproof but thats it and my tailbag's waterproof cover melted from the undertail exhaust of the bike. So what do i do to reduce the 45minutes of drenching im going to endure in about 3 hours? Garbage bags and newspaper?
I posted this in gear but it isnt as active as this part of the forum and i need the help heh. Please dont move it! I have [bacon] [bacon]
...youll get drenched anyways...just go as you are. At least you wont be unconfortable and potentially indagered by un-practical gear ;)
put your wallet in a ziplock and go for it!
(newspaper under your jacket has always worked great for cold)...
way too late repy but a 50 gallon trash bag makes a good poncho, flaps like mad if you don't tape it down a bit but helps cut the rain.
i wouldn't want to ride in the rain if given a choice either.
it sounds to me, like your main concern is getting wet, and not your safety,
so the advice i'll offer is this...
...it is only water :-\
GLantern,
(I'm in NYC) This is a rolling storm system, so I say wait for a break in the rain and gun it. Hide under overpasses if you need to. Keep blinkers on if you get caught in a downpour.
I am concerned with my safety since riding 45minutes and getting drenched the whole way is bound to cause a great deal of fatigue when your wearing a mesh jacket.

Sounds like my best course of action so far 8), i rode home on friday and played tag with the rain just raced the clouds [bacon]
You are just going to get wet...
However -- it sounds like you have never rode in the rain. If that is the case -- your riding should be your bigest concern, not your comfort.
Keep it smooth, and slow. No big throttle/brake responses. Easy on the acceleration. Ride in the tracks of tires from the cars infront of you. Watch for the center -- it will be a lot slicker with the oil washing away.
Also remember that your rotors are going to be wet. I've found that lightly apply brake and then letting off will help dry them. Then you can actually apply the brake it you will have more stopping power.
turning your head to the side will blow the water right of your face shield [thumbsup]

Yeah i have only ridden in the rain probably about twice and its very nerve racking to me i do take it easy on the brakes give myself a lot of room. Didnt know about riding in the tire tracks thats a great tip, same goes for how to keep the rotors dry. Thank you

Best advice ever i didn't even think of that! I always just tried wiping it with my glove
Celebrate life - get wet - you're waterproof. Warm shower for you, air drying clothes.
Easy does it - room, throttle, brakes. Riding in the lightning might be a bad idea, hopefully not too many open areas?
Can a friend come pick you up and give you a ride home? I've ridden in the rain before and it's no that bad, just dont' got MotoGP out there and you'll be fine.

MAYBE one of my friends would doit but then i would be leaving my bro's 2008 CBR600 in a garage unattended overnight. Im just going for it thanks for the tips everybody cant wait to see all the cagers faces as im sitting there in the rain ;D
It really isn't that bad...
After about 5 minutes you aren't going to get any more wet.

Wear it under your jacket, but you are gonna get wet no matter what, you can also try and find some rubber gloves to wear under or over yours that will help. I ride in the rain all the time and plastic bags will work just wear them under your gear or they will flap around and eventually fall all the way off
GLattern, what tires do you have? You just need to trust them, and not get jerky with the movements. Ive ridden in downpours harder than todays (that dont stop for 3+ hours) at well over 80mph highway. Just watch out for white lines, manholes, and other drivers. as far as getting soaked. Thats why i picked up a kriega R25 pack. Waterproof, so i can just dump everything in there. Im soaked, but atleast my phone, wallet, paperwork etc isnt.
Have fun. riding in the rain is a blast! your engine never gets of LO and 129 degrees. (air cooled anyway)

That has happened to me a few times - isn't that the opposite of Murphy's law?

Never thought of putting it UNDER the jacket. That's a great tip!!!
Last time we did a riding weekend and it rained the first day. We stopped and bought rain top/bottoms (my mesh jacket came with a rain top so I just had to buy the bottoms) and it was a blast!!! We were on the PA turnpike, so we didn't have to worry about potholes, manholes, cross traffic - just keep her straight and turn the head occasionally to clear the windshield. Found out the boots are not waterproof, and just ordered the waterproofer from aerostitch - so I should be set for the Labor Day weekend 4 day ride!!!
glantern - have fun in the rain. No getting around it - and it's kinda cool to mess with the people who pass you and look at you like you're crazy!! They're the crazy ones!! Better to ride - anytime!!
Be careful, enjoy the ride, be thankful that it isn't winter! Wet and cold is miserable!
