I have a 2005 S2R-800 w/ 15k on it. My chain has a few tight spots and I decided to change it out but was told to do the sprockets at the same time. No worries, but here's the question: Is it better to go one tooth down in the front or go up two teeth in the back. I'm leaning towards two more teeth in the back. Additionally what are the stock teeth 40,41,42? So I know what to order. Argh! I am going kinda nuts dealing with this. Thanks for the help guys and gals. - B :)
If you are changing sprockets anyway, go up 3 teeth in the rear. Chain and sprocket wear will be a little better than going to the 14T up front.
You don't need to change the sprockets with the chain unless they are hooked or you just want to change the gearing. As for the 14 vs 15 tooth debate, here is a good read.

thanks
14T - 43T always worked well for me.
I would go with a larger rear sprocket. But, 2 teeth will only make a slight change...
I went up 4 on the rear (15/43? I think) works well for me.
S2R800 has a 42 tooth rear stock....
Thank you Nakid

I have a 05 S2R800 and it had a 41T stock. I now have a 15/44 quick change setup.
I haven't notice much of a difference, but that is because I have gained like 30lbs. :'(

That's odd. My 05 S2R Dark was 42, my 1000 was a 41...

Yeah I had always thought my bike was a 42T too, until someone pointed it out that it was a 41T when I was trying to sell it on ebay.
BTW I have an aluminum 45T quick change, only mounted but never used, for sale if anyone is interested.
Pics?

+1
This is the way to go according to my local Ducati techs.

From the 2005 S2R Manual
15 Front
42 Rear
104 Link 520 chain.
For what it's worth Chris at Ca-Cycleworks recommended going up 1 on the rear as opposed to down 1 on the front. It's more responsive since and I'm happy there. I can't imagine the pull out of 1st you'd get by going +3 on the rear.

going up 3t on the rea is ~= to going down 1t on the front sprocket.

I get the math (.333 ratio) just commenting that even a little change down was noticeable (from .357 to .349) on the low end. Haven't noticed much in 5th and 6th.
I'm with Nutts on this one. I've tried em all and think the 14/43 is best all round.
