Title: riding with a bag
Post by: duc-e chicago on August 11, 2008, 07:04:13 PM
im looking to buy a bag to carry all my stuff in when I'm cruising around the city.  I'm leaning heavily toward the chromebags Ivan roll top bag.  If you guys carry a bag what bag do you carry?

I run a messenger bag. Just some freebie that I got a job fair. Flaps around quite a bit but I've gotten used to it.

Used to run a plain old Jansport backpack while I was t school. Works just fine. One thing to consider regardless of what you carry is how low it hangs. When i first got my monster I scraped the hell out of my seat cowl because my backpack was rubbing against it when I got on/off or sat upright (stretching) on the bike. A hard backpack would prevent this but so would taking off the cowl... which I did.

i just reasarched a bunch of bags for riding. And the chrome bags look awesome. Their smallest size is still pretty large and  it isnt it waterproof. Thats to say ,it isnt hte best at being waterproof, though the material they use is.

I just purchased a Kriega R25 backpack. its specificly designed for moto use, and they sell smaller ones such as the R15. the number indicates the size in liters. http://www.kriega.com/pages_uk/r25/R25-topframeset.html

its designed for adventure riding and everything about it is deisnged to be as waterproof as possible (waterproof material + waterproof zippers with shields) though they claim that if you have enough water, they will all eventually seep in through the thousands of holes from the thread stitches. it also takes the load of your back with the parachute like harness. i get mine in the mail either today or tomorrow nad ill throw up a review on it, along with my brand new samsung nv24hd camera! the 15 liter is the same size as your typical jansport backpcks with 1 large zipper and leather bottoms. for refrence, those huge northface backpacks are usually 35+ liters. I think 25 is a good mix.

an L L bean back pack i have had for 10 years.  If there is a strap that goes around you waste, fasten it or it will flop in the wind and scratch up the rear cowl.

I wear a Chrome 'mini metro' messenger bag for daily commuting.  It works well and i get a lot of compliments on it.....probably because of the buckle.

Believe it or not I fit my moto boots in it  :o  It was a tight but i squeezed them in there.  Shoes wouldn't be a prob but if you're carrying them on a regular basis you'll probably want the next size up.

I've used my Chrome messenger bag on occasion and it seems to work well.  It's big enough to rub on the passenger seat cover, so I try to be careful not to scratch the paint.

Chrome bag metropolis. It is a little big, but I had it from when I use to pedal my way to college. Those bags are bomb proof  ;D

I have a giant Hi-Viz yellow Aerostich messenger bag that I use.

It's basically the same as the big Chrome bags except that it doesn't have the latch on your chest for easy on-off like the Chrome does.  It's nice because it lies flat on your back when you're not using it, but it can take a ton of stuff when necesary.  I don't like backpacks because they butt up against my helmet, particularly if they're a really large one.  I use a small backpack for rides, sometimes, but for commuting/bopping around town, it's limited to the messenger bag.  +1 on rubbing on the seat cowl.

When my 'stich one wears out (it's about 5 years old, but I'm REALLY hard on it so I'll have to replace it with the next year or two), I'm going to buy a Chrome.

I bought my Chrome Metro and shortly thereafter had to buy one for my fiance because she loved mine so much... :)

Definately +1 a year later [thumbsup]

The Kriega R25 pack with the Kube Pockets, it rocks!  It is the best pack I have owned bar none.  You will forget you're wearing it.  It's really that good.  Check out Aerostitch online.

I holds more than you would expect it could.

The GF has a chrome something-or-other (pretty friggin huge) that she wears when we're on the bike and it can hold a ton.  A friend of mine had a Timbuk2 in college and you could wear that thing in a torrential downpour and not have a problem.  I think you can find them a little cheaper than the Chrome as well.  Also, whenever I wear her chrome, the buckle in the front always bugs me.  I just can't get used to it.  On longer trips I have an old REI bag that is rediculously comfortable.  It does scratch the rear cowl a bit (haven't found a bag that doesn't) but I forget I'm wearing it sometimes and I have NO problems in the wind with it.  If you go with a two strap pack (as opposed to a messenger bag) having a sternum strap is key.  The waste belt is nice too, though i could see where if it was positioned wrong it could be pretty uncomfortable.  I don't know how big the REI is exactly, but I've taken it on three day weekends before, no probs (with the exception of that one time I MAY have left the top open and I MAY have lost my toiletries).

I use an Ortlieb messenger bag that refuses to die despite a decade of almost daily, hard use on bicycle & motorcycle. Most everyone I know has been through three to five of the Chrome/Timbuk/other bags in that time period.  They're made of the same hypalon-like material as whitewater drybags & rafts, and have a roll-top closure like a WW drybag, so they're truly waterproof.

Unfortunately, they don't make the single-shoulder one that I like anymore, though bike couriers all over DC were switching to the two-shoulder version you'll find here:

http://www.ortliebusa.com/cartgenie/prodList.asp?scat=11 (http://www.ortliebusa.com/cartgenie/prodList.asp?scat=11)

I love mine, and the only downside of its absurdly Teutonic over-engineering is that I kinda wouldn't mind a different color, but I can't justify a new bag with this one still chugging along. Fortunately, the slick surface is great for stickers (I think I'm up to 15 "I Voted" stickers at the moment), so the theme changes every few months...
