Title: Best open clutch cover for my 848?
Post by: ScottieDucati on August 13, 2008, 07:03:39 AM
I just got an 848 and love the bike, but I was wondering what the best clutch cover would be to open up that classic rattle rattle sound????

Scottie -

That's a great question!  There are a few options you have for bringing that classic Ducati sound to your new R6 848.

The first, and cheapest route is to simply drill holes in your stock clutch cover.  For the best results, try a 1/4" titanium drill bit.  Make sure to spray the bit with WD-40 periodically so that it stays nice and lubricated.  Once nice thing about this is you can put lots of fun patterns in your clutch cover, much like antique tin ceilings.

See below for inspiration:

Another option, of course, is to completely remove the clutch cover.  Please note, this will not only convert your clutch to a "dry' style clutch, but also your engine to a "dry" lubrication system.  Make sure you've completed your 600 mile service and have the engine properly run in so it can appropriately handle being a dry system.

One popular option as well is to tie sleighbells to the tail of your bike - much like the "truck nutz" that so many people enjoy, this will give you that classic "pocket full of quarters" sound that people generally associate with owning a Ducati.

*Additionally, a Tamborine may be used.  The MV Agusta F4 "Tamborine" edition had this as standard.

Please note: installing an aluminum clutch basket and plates will render the first two options useless.

Good luck!  [thumbsup]

Is the 848 a wet clutch or a dry clutch...I thought it was wet?

There is no "best".  Some trade off between protection and style.
Look in this thread if it has a dry clutch:

Actually on a serious note.... there are TWO 848's that I know of with Dry Clutches, both are run out of Denmark in a national-level racing series.  The team did a dry clutch conversion involving more machining time than you could imagine simply to make clutch pack changes quicker (they race a lot of endurance races).

I wouldn't even want to know the full extent of what's involved with that!!!!

Oddly, although it is a wet clutch, there's still a bit of sound coming out from there... not too bad ;)

I wouldn't trade the clutch action / shifting smoothness for a dry clutch again to be honest, the 848's clutch / tranny is the tits!!!

Wait, i'm confused... scottie are you joking about turning your wet clutch into a dry clutch?

don't the engines and clutches of the 848 and 696 sit in the same oil?

Yes, I am joking ;)  It's a wet clutch, I have no intention of changing it!

But I was serious, there DOES EXIST an 848 with a dry clutch, it just took thousands of dollars and many many hours of machining time to make it happen.

I don't get it  ??? Is yours one of these 2?

I hear you can get billet covers from Moto Wheels
