Well I'm close to buying a monster but it had to compete with 2 other bikes on my short list, so; it got me thinking. Whats on your motorcycle short list?
Mine: Monster 696
Triumph Scrambler
Drz 400sm with S wheels to swap out
I'll most likely buy the 696 and trade my current DP bike in for the DRZ. So.....all I'll need to do is talk my GF into thinking the Scrambler is the best motorcycle ever built so she can buy it. [evil]
i love the look of that scambler (as well as the bonnie and thruxton) but the numbers just don't add up.
the thing's like 450lbs dry! for a scrambler.
at any rate, when they first introduced that new bonnie lineup, i was all about the thruxton for a while.
glad i waited.
BMW HP2 Sport
Ducati 848
Triumph Speed Triple
ZX-10
CBR1000RR
HD 1200
BMW 800GS
Ducati 848 (What the hell, make that a 1098S)
Ducati ST3 (I know where there is brand new one just waiting)
1980 Suzuki GS750 preferably with a dented gas tank and an oil leak.
Billy Barty
my memory
and.....uhhh
I forgot
998
'00-01 900 monster
Bimota Tesi 3D :o
Confederate Wraith ;D
Ducati 1000 Sport :D

I know what you mean, but I still can not take it off my short list. It keeps making its way back to the top. That and the TW200!
Also want a BMW 800GS but if I was riding around the world, I would prefer to look more like a vagabond on a DRZ (with a seat and a pillow under my bum) than a rich man waiting to get picked off by some low life asshat.
Realistically and what i can afford, its
DRZ-400SM
197x CB-750F or 360T
Honda CRF-150
WR450f (dune duty)
GS800 (commuter)
GSXR600 (track only)
Used Honda Cub..... :-\ or a Puch Moped
KLR 650
HyperMotard
916
GS1200
/reserve space for the next gen. multistrada...maybe/

You got a point there. But I think that if you take off the BMW badges the scum bags would think anything that ugly has to be a cheap ass bike.
Maybe it would be safer to ride a 70s yamaha 350 single enduro with some dents and rust around the world :P.

Lots of DRZ's on the wish list. You guys should compare the OTD price of a DRZ to a Husqvarna. The Husky is in a completely different league in terms of HP, weight, suspension, and brakes. The MSRP is higher on the Husky but the dealers sell them without the rape fee that makes the OTD price of a Suzuki just as high.

looking for a trail 70 or 90 to ride behind my wife when she's on her scooter.
My dad bought a scrambler last year to get back into riding after 25 years or so. This was also the bike I learned to ride on. As far as the cool factor goes, it definitely has it.....except now I have to listen to everyone at the gas station tell me how they had a bonneville back in the 70s. It runs fairly well, but is by no means a speed demon. We fabbed a set of pipes for it and re-jetted the carbs. Those vertical twins, especially the scrambler with the 270 firing interval, have such a sweet sound.

Hell ya! or say.... a certain bonneville!!!.....maybe...a vintage bonnie....Ya we'll go with that! hehe. In all honesty, I would do a round the world trip on a flat green scrambler, if not a DRZ! [moto]
Husqvarna SM 450.

What excellent taste you have, my complements. Too bad that Bonnie ain't for sale. But I can tell you where you can go and to pick it up. Ride

Haha, I think it would be cool to rig the 1200gs with a trailer, that way I can haul a track bike with the BMW and not need a car :) Imagine the looks!

my short list of bikes, but I can't afford any of them at the moment:
i have a monster, but some day I'll get a M1000s in the senna paint scheme, I prefer the DSS
bmw r100CS in black with some nice krausers
something for sport touring, I love the multi minus the looks, but I want to ride across country soon. SO something that would work for that better than my monster in terms of comfort and storage. perhaps a triumph sprint st or a used st3 or 4

BMW HP2 Sport
Ducati 848
Triumph Speed Triple
+1 Triumph Speed Triple very sweet ride [thumbsup]
My short list.......
Monster 800 or 1000
Honda 919
Street Triple
DRZ400SM was on the short list until I purchased it. [thumbsup]
As much as I love the L-twin, I demoed a kawasaki concours 14 a few weeks ago and it's been on my sport tourer short list ever since.
Great brakes, nice seat and a gobs of power on tap.
Wildly varying degrees of reasonability and practicality, but these are the ones that seem to hang around on the list longer than a fleeting "I want that!"
- 1999-ish through 2001 Monster 750 or 900, with a lean toward the 900.
- Similar era 748.
- Early 90s BMW Paris-Dakar:
- 1976-78 Suzuki GS400 (or maybe a GS550/GS750):
had a lot of thoughts lately:
07/08 600RR or 08 GSX-R600 (track/race)
08 Ninja 250R or a 01-03 F4i (maybe for a 2nd track bike?)
DRZ400SM for the street, though I'd rather have a Yamaha street 'tard a bit faster than the 250 they've got now. Obviously I'd rather have a hypermotard but I doubt I'll have that much $$$$ for a while
actually with my current budget, none of those are really bikes I can "afford"
does Wal-Mart still sell bicycles under $100? I might could afford one of those after saving up for a couple months!
in no particular order ...
Desmosedici RR
RC30
1098R
749R
NCR New Blue
750 F1
900 SL
Short list of bikes I can afford.
Ducati S2R 1100
Ducati ST3
Triumph Street Triple R
hmm, dont have a bike as of yet: (never owned one)
monster 620/695

GSXR 750 for track duty
The new BMW Moto GP Bike ( Homologation) Dolph
already got the bikes that I can afford ..........
Wanna see the list of bikes that I CAN'T afford??? ;D

Wow, a lot of UJMs here.
K7 GSXR750
Triumph 675
Kawasaki ZX-6 636
848

Benelli TNT 899
Triumph Street Triple
another 695 to put it into a vacuum chamber and open it in 20 years
2009 v5 vfr

This is on my short list of bikes I wish Ducati would make...and then it would be on my short list of bikes that I would sell my left nut to afford!
Hmmm....
1. Keep my 9-hunny, because I can afford that!
2. BMW 800GS for world travels
3. KTM 300, for dirt... Have an '01, but I'd like an upgrade
4. Maybe an old Bultaco or or Maico for shits and giggles...

TW200!!!! Just saw one on the highway. I love that thing! Those balloon tires look so cool.
What do you guys think of those Royal Enfields? Thought it would be cool to tool around on.
That I can "afford" [roll]
Triumph Speed Triple
S2R1K
KTM RC8
1. Buell 1125R
2. SR4
3. KTM RC8
4. ST4
5. The one I am currently fiddling with, a 1988 Honda Hawk with an RC51 front end and penske or Ohlins rear shock, 700cc big bore kit, heads and cams from Hordpower, M4 exhaust, VFR rear wheel, monster seat and a bit of a diet to get it under 360 lbs. Should be almost as entertaining as the RC and easier to keep my license from melting. So far I am just gathering up parts and planning the diet out. It looks like the engine mods should be good for 65 to 70 rwhp and the suspension mods should make an already flickable bike telepathic.
I got to ride a KTM Superduke a friend of mine just bought, that should also be on my list because it was a ton of fun to rail through the corners on.
I could afford a 1098R or even a Desmosedici RR, but I wisely stick to a S2R1000. The reason being, I would simply wreck the damn thing, and being 45 I don't heal up like I used to when I was a college kid riding bikes ;D
The S2R1000 is easy to ride at a decent pace, (a bit over the speed limit) where as the crotch rockets just beg to be ridden hard all the time and they suck in traffic. So anyway what's on my short list? I'll probably add a cruiser to my garage as the wife and boy do not like riding on the back of the monster.
A flat black, rattle canned, debadged, blacked out Hayabusa....zero bling, zero chrome (did I just say that??) with 3rd generation night vision goggles and a switch that kills all the lights.
And maybe that GS something-or-other Adventure Beemer.....as if I toured.
My 1999 748 monoposto back....
Ducatis' next liquid cooled naked
bigger new monster in "S" trim

GSXR 750

749s
05-06 S4R
Honda 600 shadow to tote around wifey.
Thought about the MTS620, but really don't want something that requires much maint.
new 848
used BMW R1100 RT-P (need for moto marshalling)
used Vintage Guzzi El Dorado ex-police bike
used 1100DSs Uglystrada
Will probably consider the RT-P very seriously and replace my ST-4s with an Duc SBK.
I want to add a Moto Guzzi to my list.
Let's see, I sold the 695, so now I'm bikeless.
Here's the shortlist of what I want and can afford
1 - 848 - object of desire
2 - Gixxer 750 - "practical" choice
3 - CBR 600RR - been there - loved it
4 - The MotoGuzzi Griso is just too cool, but a naked bike just will not work for me at this point.
5 - BMW 1200GS - If something major happens and I'm able to ride with complete freedom.
For the past few months my short list consisted mainly of an M900 and a 900SS/SP.
Brought a '97 SP home with me yesterday, so my toy fund is gone... looks like the Monster will have to wait a few more years.. (Unless I sell something. :o )
Man,,,,
I sat on a Victory 8 Ball...
The model with the smaller front tire and upside down forks. Arlin Ness exhaust ... Nice
The sales guy is a sport rider and said the darn thing handles good for a cruzer...
If a cruzer can I drive it drunk..?
Now I am not a cruzer guy but I would take one in a heart beat.
