Well, As some of you would know, I bought a new ohlins shock for the back of my S2R, But it would seem during assembly, the Seal has been torn or damaged, after a short ride there is an ring of Oil around the half to 2/3rd's of the shock's shaft.
I clean it off and take it for another quick run, and when I come back, it is there again. I have been doing this for a week in the hope it might just be some oil or grease from the assembly of the shock and once I cleaned it all off it would disappear, but no joy.
The Guys at Motowheels have been excellent in helping me and have offered to find a service agent here in Australia and have it repaired (under warranty)
Bit of a bugger, now I have to remove and put my Showa back in for the time being.
I should be a master at changing the Shock in an S2R by the time this is all said and done! [thumbsup]
Not blaming anyone or angry, that's life, mistakes/accidents happen, it's just the 3 to 4 hours of removing Ohlins and refitting when it comes back.
Just needed to have a little moan, I feel better now ;D
Nothing to moan about mate. In the end your gonna have an Ohlins shock. Many people wont so really, don't sweat it and let us know what happens. That said, a new shock shouldn't have problems but as long as they fix it up right you'll be good.
I had the same thing happen with my Ohlins; twice though! [laugh] It came in with a blown seal and I didn't realize it until I had it installed... Take it off, send it to Ohlins for re build... No charge (of course and they paid shipping both ways...) but kinda (tons +) a hassle... Get it back, install, ride for a month or so, go out to leave for a multi day trip, and all the oil is in a puddle under the bike; gak! Not again... Yup... Back to Ohlins on the East coast... Oh well, been great ever since... [moto]
Well, It turns out I was wrong, I spoke to an Ohlins specialist and he advise that with the 46DR/DU321 that has been modified (EG:Revalved) That during assembly a lot of grease is used to protect the seals when the shaft/rod is reinstalled.
It is is not unusual for this to runoff (As in appear as a ring of oil/grease on the shock rod/shaft) for as much as 2 - 3 months after a shock is installed and 1st used.
He also said the oil will not gather on the shock shaft, being a 5 weight oil it will run off and drip below the bike, it is to light to stick to the shaft, you might get a few spots, but not rings of oil like I was seeing.
The grease is a light brown colour (if the Ohlins recommended grease is used) which is what fooled me into thinking the shock was leaking oil.
So in this case, I'm glad to be proved wrong. [thumbsup]
