Title: help, aftermarket tach
Post by: midlifeduc on August 19, 2008, 05:18:20 PM
hello, I'm a newbe. Just got a 94 m900 at a steal, traded a suzuki for it. I have a problem, the electric tach is non working. The lights flash, sometimes they all light up for no reason, some just stay lit. The former owner basterdized the poor bike and I am trying to bring it back to glorly. When he hooked up the tach he cut wires and just twisted and tape, not even a cheap but connector. I fixed the connection the right way but no success. I need help!!!!! [bang]

Well, it would be nice to know what kind of tach it is.

it is a half moon , it is also in the gauge area . looks like it may be a factory add on , carbon bezel around speedo and idiot lights . it says  AVIACOMPOSITI-ROMA on the face. also the tach uses LEDs .

That is a Ducati Performance tach.

The problem you describe was very common.

I'd look into a replacement...I don't think they are available any longer.

Or just live without a tach.  They weren't factory items until (I think) 2000 for the 900 and 2001 for the other Monsters.  Another possible, obviously more expensive solution is to replace your speedometer with a tach from these folks:     http://www.spa-uk.co.uk/design/tachometers.asp

If it's one of those LED tachometers like in the photo below, they were never that good even when working perfectly.  You're truly better off without one.

The better Ducati Peformance tach looked like this, although most of them were less than perfect as well, even though they were much better than the LED solution.
