Title: little problem w/ my new 696
Post by: mrplease on August 20, 2008, 10:27:31 PM
just picked up and ALMOST new 09' 696

i bought it used from a guy who bought it last month. it only has 1200 miles on it and full warranty so its basically new.

ok, now the problem. the next morning after it was sitting in my garage there was a couple of drips of oil underneath the bike. after a further inspection i found out it was coming from the oil drain plug. i tried to tighten it up a little and it was still coming out a little.

is this a common problem?

i called the guy and asked him about it and he said it never leaked on him. but he did just change the oil himself right before i picked up the bike. is it possible he over tightened it and broke the seal? i don't know i'm just throwing this out there...

either way i made an appointment at the ducati dealership here to change the oil and i'll have them look at it there to see if theres something wrong with the seal or something. but they're about 2 weeks out.

anyone had any experience with this sort of problem?

oh and here a pic of the new toy...

I'd get a new crush washer first. For a couple bucks it's a cheap place to start.

I would try removing the fork reflectors as they may be causing the leak  ;D

I have not heard of this as a problem and my 696 does not leak any oil.  It may be an easy washer fix.  Nice ride;  the pearl white looks great.

+1 on the reflectors being the cause, nice ride though, you seem to have a bit of a reach problem  ;D

+ 1 on the crush washer and + 1 on the red blinking light being the immobilizer, remember not to tighten the plug too much, if you've got a torque wrench it should be about 40nm, make sure where the crush washer meets the engine is clean.

Probably the crush washer.  As long as the leak is real little and the plug is tight you may as well wait until the oil change.  If something is wrong they can't say you did it.  Put a drip pan under the bike and pretend it is an old British bike.  I have to admit I probably wouldn't follow my own advice though :P

I used fishing line and cut off the foam (like flossing teeth).  It took about 15 minutes to rub off the adhesive portion that was left.  I used a plastic scrapper for the adhesive.  The plastic scrapper was for cleaning our pizza stone, which your wife will surely appreciate if she is like my wife  :-\

I f he did change the oil, maybe he overfilled it?

I'm curious though. Assuming he had the bike serviced at the scheduled 600-mile mark, why would he change the oil again just 600 miles later?

i have the records and it showed that he did the 600 mile service.

and before i picked up the bike the guy said he was gonna detail it and change the oil for me...

maybe as a courtesy thing. i wish he didn't touch it to tell you the truth...

Yabbutt you'd probably use a new crush washer if you did an oil change as well.  ;D

Once you get the reflector off, (floss is a good idea) you can use "Goof Off" or even WD-40 to soak and remove the adhesive/foam.

Alternatively, you can use a heat gun to heat up the reflector and the whole thing will just come off, adhesive and all.

After I installed my Termi Kit on my bike I noticed oil under the bike for a week or so. I was lost to figure out what it was until I traced it from my airbox drain hose and the freshly oiled K&N air filter.

an old credit card and a blow dryer.  I did not have any goo to clean up after that.
