No offense LYD, but it's twice as far to OH as it is to Taos for the LSD folks, and I bet the skiing in Hill Country is better than in Ohio.

I'm seriously interested in a ski trip this season (to someplace like NM or CO).  If there are others interested, discuss.

Willing to ski or surf - not too good at either one - sounds like fun though.  [thumbsup]

I've been to Wolf Creek last 2 years in a row.  Dig it.  No lodging on the mountain, so you're back in town each night.  Sleepy litttle town of Pagosa Springs - not much night life.  But good trip for 1 day drive, reasonable ski tix and lodging costs.  Never been to Taos, so I'm not sure how much more expensive to expect.

What are we thinking - before Dec 31, or after?  Do we need a poll?  I've heard after spring break is over is pretty good in Taos (fewer people).  I'm up for just about anywhere in CO or NM really.

During the school/college holiday break (prob before Dec 31) would work best for us.  Tommy usually is off work for a couple weeks over Christmas, but if it is a short trip we can prob work it out after new year also.

I'm linking the sound of this trip... ski and surf...

People do snowboard and snow ski on Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for white mountain) on the Big Island of Hawaii. There are no ski lifts to take you up the mountain, which is over 13,500 feet high, so you must rent a 4WD vehicle or hire a guide. Skiers take turns being the driver up a road that also serves several observatories at the summit.

Snow falls during winter months, though the ski season can run from November through July, and the snow can accumulate to a few meters depth. February and March are the best bets for good snow. This has been called the finest snow in the world, and there is a ski-able area of almost 100 square miles.

At the summit, you have an incomparable, unforgettable 360 degree view - Mauna Kea's moonscape terrain, the lush tropical vegetation below, and the surrounding ocean. As an extra, in the distance you see Maui's Haleakala crater.

Snow skiing in Hawaii is unlike skiing anywhere else in the world, plus, how many places do you know where you can go snowboarding in the morning and scuba diving in the afternoon? So get with your shredheads and launch some gnarly tweakage.

Our family would drive to Wolf Creek/Pagosa Springs every Christmas from about 1978 - 1984.  Good times.  We went back there in literally decades last Spring Break; it is surprisingly unchanged.  Still a very nice ski place that is, like you say, easy to get to and beautifully scenic.

Drawing a line in the sand here...

I'm gonna ski Taos this season.

I'll go during "off" times: After Turkey day, before Christmas, after New Years, before Spring Break.
The best skiing is spring skiing, after Spring Break. Last week of the season is 1/2 price [thumbsup]

so i mentioned this to wife and her response was " after recent surgeries you seriously believe this is a good idea?"  "yeah! it's long way away plus i'm not a kennedy!!"  "uhhh how about noooo!"  " think about it and get back to me."  "answer will be no then also!" as she walks out of the room. man and i thought she was supposed to honor and cherish. i gotta talk to my pastor he left out the whole being married to a nurse means anything dangerous is impossible to pull off part.

DLS,

I can probably swing Taos between Jan 1 and Spring Break.  Or, when is the "last week of the season" exactly?  We talking late March?  April?

then I would have to get a passport........hell I can't even get a tx drivers licesnse.........

I went to the tx drivers liscense place last week.  I took: Kentucky drivers liscense, Proof of TX car insurance, vehicle registration, Social Security card, and proof of tx residence.  The guy behind the counter actually said, I'll need to see your passport.  [bang] [bang]  I smiled and said, I'm an american......  I'm not trying to get into the country, just this state.  He said we need proof  [bang] [bang] I looked down at my Kentucky drivers liscense, Proof of TX car insurance, vehicle registration, Social Security card, and proof of tx residence and said really..........and what is this to you.  He said that without a passport, military id  or bith certificate, they couldn't prove I was me......I said what about my original ss card and state issued drivers liscense?  He said that they dont use a SS card as proof and other states don't have the same rules as TX for getting a liscence, so they can't use my liscense.  Keep in mind that i waited in line for like an hour and had to circle around the building for over 10 minutes just to park.  While waitng I noticed that I was the only person there that didn't speak spanish or ebonics...... [bang] [bang]  Now being the only "cracker" in the building I realized that I was no longer in Kansas anymore toto...  So, I verified that all I need to prove I was me in this state was a birth certificate.  You can get a birth certificate through the mail with just a small amount of information.  Hell, my mother-in-law got my sons mailed to her without question.  So I politely told the man that this fine state should just become it's own country so I wouldn't have to lie to myself and think I was in america anymore.

Call me wrong, but I couldn't help but wonder how many "legal immigrants" have walked into that building with less proof than me and walked out with a spiffy new TX DL.
