So....got it, loved it, rode the snot out of it. Then.....I started to get stiff, shoulder hurts. Neck hurts. Constant pain. Picked up a car, took some time off from riding, went to physical therapy, felt better. Several months pass, start riding again.
Instant agony. Just constant, dull, mind numbing pain.
Take some more time off, nothing else changes 'cept the lack o' riding and....no pain!
The Monster just isn't comfy for me anymore, not even with the aftermarket bars and the like. It just...hurts to ride it. So....time to sell it and find something a little more fitting to me. Boo.
You mean, your gonna have to sell your Monster...not your duc. :(
Multinoodle?
Is it just the riding position that causes the pain, or riding in general?

Position. Other bikes that I've ridden have not caused this issue. My old Honda was one of them.
Good thing I still have it :)
Ural... Ural.... Ural...
Well that really sucks.
You've already done the PT and laid off the bike for a few months so it's not like you haven't tried. I have problems in my neck between C-2 and C-5. Sometimes a ride is no fun and I go back home. Other days it's okay. It comes and goes. It might be okay for 6 months. And then for no particular reason a nerve or an artery gets pinched and it's back to swallowing anti-inflammatories and visiting the sadistic PT lady for a few weeks ??? . I've gotten used to this little game my body plays with me and my experience is that pain from an old injury can flare up and then pretty much disappear almost as quickly. During those times you can still have some fun. ;D
I know it's easy for me to say...I'm not the guy hurtin'. Things could be different for you. But don't give up too easily. If you can afford it how about pulling the insurance and parking the bike until the spring to see what happens?
Of course.....as long as you can get past the ugliness of it...a Multistroodle might work too. ;D
Aww. hell....!! You still have the Honda as backup? No problem man! Just take a rest from the Monster. I did something similar.
I kept my Honda Magna after buying the Monster. I rode the Monster for one summer. This spring I sold the Magna. Yes, I did have to visit my favorite Physio-lady a few times...but what the hell. [moto]
Er, there is no winter here :P
The issue being it doesn't come and go. Getting on the bike=pain. Took a while to build up (27k in two years), but it's there, and I'm tired of it. I'm not old by any stretch, so my concern is that long term usage may lead to long term damage.
As for the multistroodle, well.....I can deal with ugly (I like BMW's), but typically only when ugly follows function (see-BMW). The stroodle? It's just hideous for no good reason. Were it a spartan child, it would've been tossed off a cliff to cleanse it from the bloodline. No way I can ride one of those.
That and I ride a lot. My first year on the S4R cost over 2k in service. I can't justify that.

I'd look at the ST line. They are sharp bikes and still got that Duc magic. [thumbsup]
hypertard?
I'm thinking about one, due to it having a MUCH more comfortable riding position for me. Of course....I have a feeling my next bike just might have to be a KTM 990 adventure (mmmmm....offroad).
a hypertard would be great though....still hooligany (if not more so)
Shucks..does that mean you'll be leaving the DMF? Boo..
. ;D
I feel your/my pain. I'm getting a constant "crick" in my neck that hurts like hell - never goes away. It's one of those C vertebra I think. Had over 20 years of lower back pain until it was fixed 15 years ago. I know what it is to hurt and I ride EVERY day.
I think If I were to go with another make of bike due to pain of riding position it might be a 1200 R model BMW of some sort or even a KTM 950 SM. If ugly gets to you though, nothing looks a good as a Monster IMHO.
I have seen some good looking modded Multis, but stock they do suck to look at.
Good luck Buddy.

shoulder and neck huh, ever try changing your helmet? a lighter helmet might cure the problem. my scorpion exo 700 weighs a ton, the same as my uzi as a matter of fact! try riding around with a brain bucket on. that might help! my neck gets sore and my shoulder too, then it creeps down my arms. when i was riding in ct one day i had no helmet on. and i didn't get the pain. let me know how it works out.

I am in a similar boat where my throttle hand is iffy depending on the day.
I am hoping to make it through the winter season and then buy a used car next year. You guys might remember my Lotus, s2000, M Coupe thread etc.
Hopefully I can split time between the bike and the car so I can continue to ride :(

FROM THE ABOVE LINK:
Origin
This modern-sounding phrase is in fact at least as early as Shakespeare. He used it in Othello, 1604:
Iago:
"I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs."
Shakespeare may have been the first to use it in English, although a version of it appears in Rabelais' Gargantua and Pantagruel, circa 1532. This was translated into English by Thomas Urquhart and published posthumously around 1693:
"In the vigour of his age he married Gargamelle, daughter to the King of the Parpaillons, a jolly pug, and well-mouthed wench. These two did oftentimes do the two-backed beast together, joyfully rubbing and frotting their bacon 'gainst one another."
Dude, he said [bacon] [bacon]..................in 1532. [laugh]
I wonder if they had forums back then for modding your horse or wagon....
"nice leatherfiber bridle!!"
"Thanks, man. Wait till you see my new Wagon-Cat running boards. They're awesome. I might make WOMB this month." ;D
1) You people need to learn how to use the "search" function. Odds are if you've seen it in five thousand places, there's probably an explanation.
2) You people can jack someone else's thread. I is in pain here-yer lack of general Shakespearean knowledge makes me head hurt to match me back.
Also, while I know this is a Ducati board, let's be clear-I don't want another Ducati right now. They require servicing too often for the amount I ride. When the cost of service in one year approaches the value of my car-that is an issue.

I'm pretty sure people never read an entire thread before typing. ;)

So your car is worth $600 ???
You're suppose to get it serviced every 15 to 20k right :-\

4 services in one year=$2400 on a four valver. Add in tires, etc, and we're basically at the cost of my Falcon.
Dunno your skill set but I had the impression you're a bit mechanically-inclined ... so DIY on the service is out of the picture?
Or am I confirming to everyone reading this just how mechanically lacking I am in not realizing how absurd DIY is? ;D
make the beast with two backs that, they need to teach Shakespeare at whater school you went to. everyone should know that phrase?
Shakespeare was the ulitmate pimp, xpt for the whole emo thing.

Get a 2-valver. (Hyper. They're excellent for replacing fire-damaged 4v Ducs. ;D )
And if you're riding 24-make the beast with two backsing-thousand miles per year, when do you have time to drive a car??
So I missed my 6k and my 12k and got my valves and belts done at 14k and now I am at 20k =)
So in 20k I am out $600 plus tires. I will get my valves done again at 24k
But I hear ya Someguy. If my body holds up I can see myself riding a 08 250 Ninja in the future. 70 plus mpg [thumbsup]

sorry to hear about your pain dave :-\
i hope that you find a bike that fits you, and you are comfortable on/with [moto]
i know this probably isn't your problem because you are fine on your honda, but,
when i first started riding i had neck and back pain after every ride...
it went away when i got a new/lighter helmet.
have you and paula looked into a sidecar for her 695? ;D
uh hate to tell you guys but the 696 has a better riding position. much more upright. i can ride with my fingers touching the bar and my back straight.

A DIY is within my scope-except for most of the time I've had it, I've had nothing else. So I can take it apart, but if for some reason I can't put something together, I'm hosed.
If I need to go to a parts store, there's nothing close by-it'd be an all day bicycle to local train affair. Once again hosed. This does not work out well when ytou need to ride it to work in the morning.
And anyone who does it yourself knows that you *will* have problems at some point, and calling a taxi to try and make it to the dealer on Saturday before they close ('cause they sure ain't open on Sunday or Monday) would suck. Having to wait until Tuesday to finish the job I started Friday would suck, so it was a much better turnaround to have the local shop do it.
All that aside, I still really like the bike, and would deal with the costs of ownership if they actually meant I could ride it. I can't, so they get irritating.

The maintenance cost does get pretty high, but I'm not sure it's much better with a BMW. I was looking at a new GS which require annual maintenance and I'm sure the dealer is going to bend you over every time. Maybe post on advrider and see what people are paying for annual service?
Doesn't your Monster have white wheels? Before you sell it, you might want to astroturf a bit to convince people how easy they are to keep clean. :)

Damn, that's a crappy conclusion to have to come to. Sorry to hear it. :-\ On the other hand, at least you know the answer is "ride something different" as opposed to "stop riding altogether." So, as unhelpful as such a thought may be, uh, it could be worse.
But don't worry. I'm sure that, given time, you'll learn to love the turbo 'Busa as much as you loved the S4.

I'm thinking
really big PugglePod.
Went and checked out BMW's yesterday. Liked a couple of 'em, but just can't justify spending that much on a bike. I make look into older bikers.
I'm thinking supermoto for hooliganism, and mebbe the old Honda as a commuter.
