Title: Do you pay for parking in paid parking lots?
Post by: pnut on August 25, 2008, 12:44:10 AM
Just curious how many of you pay for parking when parking your bikes in paid lots.  Most of the ones that I visit frequently, I've found "alternate" entrances that either don't have an attendant or have a wide enough gap at the one armed bandit.

I thought that was why we bought them:

ease of getting through traffic
park anywhere
free parking

oh yeah. . . . FUN!!

Most of the lots in Boston have signs that say "no motorcycles"... To be honest, when I do take my bike in the city I usually street park, I always make it a point to find a spot with a fire hydrant on one side or there are sometimes spots with a hydrant on one side and a crosswalk on the other, I do whatever I can to avoid cars from bordering my spot. I sometimes throw it on the sidwalk or an alley if running a quick errand but I have never snuck into any lots or garages... yet...

I pay for the lot near my work (downtown Seattle). I ride in everyday so it'd be really hard to consistently sneak in and out. I also don't trust people enough to leave it just sitting on the sidewalk everyday...plus the cops here aren't so fond of that. Moto parking is about $75/month, which isn't bad considering a car is $180-$240 depending on the garage.

When not at work I rarely pay...I just try and park wherever it will fit, sometimes on the sidewalk (everywhere but downtown).

A lot of our pay lots are ones where you have to display a receipt on your dash.  I usually have to get a bit creative as far as where to put the receipt.

Hmmm... I would think pulling the clutch lever and pinching it in there would be a good spot, shouldn't blow away and should be visible...

That's always the worry.

If the receipt is long enough, I lift the seat and stick half of it between the tank and the front of the seat, with the other half sticking out.
So far so good.

You take your license plate off ?
hahaha...cheap mofos, I´m sorry  [evil]
Exhausts for 2000 bucks and don't have some cents for the parking...
Its 10-20 kroner here ( 2-4 $) if you pay and 500 if you don't ..

After Blunderberg took over NYC all of the motorcycle parking disappeared.  There was free parking at Columbus circle and down by City Hall.  There were lots in midtown that had dedicated parking at street level for motorcycles, all cars were parked by attendants up top.  There was one down in Battery Park that was self park.  You got a ticket on the way in and paid to leave.  All of these places stopped allowing motorcycles at the same time.  So with no more legal spots left to park I had to park illegally.  I would pull the plate and chain the bike to the side of St. Patrick's Cathedral.  I wonder what the mayor's problem is with motorcycles.

I know many won't like my opinion on this but...How much is your integrity worth? The price of parking it seems for some. Theft is theft.

First/only garage i've tried parking in, as i was hitting the button for a ticket, the attendants yelled at me to just go around the arm.

So i did.

I always get a ticket stub to pay for parking in structures... but about half the time, the attendant just waves me through.   [thumbsup]

Just yesterday, I was blasting through some dirt trails on my dual sport at the local state park... wound up at an exit gate where an attendant was checking for paid ticket stubs.  I didnt have any cause i entered the park through a side trail meant for pedestrians/horses.  Ticket lady just waved me through, but not before telling me to slow down.   ;D

I guess CA is just more biker friendly than NYC.

My grandmother was in the hospital for about 2 weeks this month and my family complained about paying for parking.  I took a ticket everytime but when I would go to get out the bike wasn't heavy enought to register so I couldn't have paid if I wanted to.  Just went around the arm.  Small thing but it was a bright spot to an otherwise crappy situation.

I didn't pay in a college parking lot for a one time event. I didn't know where to put the stub so it wouldn't get ripped off. I ended up paying for a parking ticket. I still don't know how to fix a parking stub to the bike so it won't get stolen.

There are moto-only spots around DC.  you pay a meter like everyone else, usually 25 cents/hour.

if in a parking structure, we dont pay in sant amonica...in LA depends on who is managing the structure...

on the street, yes we have to pay. Altho parking inbetween cars is a comonly used procedure, and usually you dont get a ticket...

on the other side, in some areas (Main Street) meters go till 10:00 pm  ;D

The garage closest to where I work in silver spring does not register my bike when I pull up to the ticket dispenser.
I always have to go around.

Not to rub it in, but I don’t have to pay for parking.

Matter of fact, upon returning to work after taking a week off to recover from my accident, I returned to a new motorcycle parking area right next to handicap parking.  They actually pulled up the pavement, about 6 parking spaces, and poured a concrete slab so our kick stands won’t sink.

Isn't Blunderberg also working on a plan to ban cars as well? I think he's trying to give you a hint, NYC is no place for motorcycles.  You guys are crazy, everytime I'm in that city and see a bike weaving through the sea of cabbies. - I just shake my head ruefully....  More power to yah, ride safe!
