Title: Helmets with airbags
Post by: Slide Panda on August 25, 2008, 09:34:28 AM
More folks working on airbag tech for moto applications.  This one is a helmet mounted bag to protect the neck.  Seems interesting, though I haven't had the time to read over the site in depth.

But I figured people might want to see what might be down the pike..

I hope they paid that dude a lot of money to crash into that car.

In the local newspaper:

Wanted: Motorcycle rider to crash into car. Will provide car and motorcycle.

From the video it looks like the airbag deploys when the motorcycle strikes the car.  Seems like this is more of an integrated system than simply a helmet.

Oh, it is: http://www.apcsystem.com/eng/airbag_sys.php

For those too lazy to read it all:
"A very small, simple control box fitted to the motorbike’s crash helmet holder or under the seat is responsible for handling all the stimuli received from the outside. Depending on the result obtained, the crash helmet will receive the order to inflate, so, in less than 15 hundredths of a second, the rider’s safety levels will be increased.

ll this is carried out without cables or other physical elements linking the rider to the motorbike. In the picture you can see the APC control box and crash helmet, the only two elements making up and completing the product."

The wireless feature's a big step up from the tether based designs for jackets that I've seen.  Does away with games of pull the tether at stop lights though.... That and the embarassing 'premature inflation' problems... ahem

RS-Taichi had a cable mounted system for racers that deployed a neck pillow when you 'dismounted' the bike in an accident - tell me the bloke wouldn't pull up after qualifing and walk away from the bike without disconnecting the cable - have to happen at least once!

I'd probably buy 1 if it was comfortable to wear and didn't look ridiculous.

I'm waiting for the one that will keep my ribs from breaking in a crash.  Dolph
